WHTT Sat Night Party

I noticed on a ride through town that WHTT had some type of party show on sat night. They played alot of 70s and 80s dance/rock/pop party songs from artists like The Pointer Sisters- Nuetron Dance, Carl Douglas- Kung Fu Fighting, Abba- Dancing Queen and The Romantics-Talking in your sleep. The music mix sounded pretty good, anyone know how long they have been doing this? And this is obviuosly a show to compete with WJYEs Lance Diamond show.. Let the radio wars begin!!!

According to previous posts, WHTT began this transition while WJYE and WTSS were in Christmas music mode. You're likely correct in presuming WHTT's Saturday night party shuffle is directed at Lance Diamond's show on WJYE. IIRC, Diamond is voice-tracked while WHTT is live.

Clearly, WHTT has clearly broken away from the image of Oldies 104, playing 70's and 80's and a few 90's songs from time to time. The station sounds better than it has in years, musically, promotionally and air talent. Now let's see what the average 25-54 listener thinks when the Fall ratings are delivered later this month.

I think WJYE is going to be in for a real dogfight this coming year.. WHTT will no doubt be there biggest challenge, but also Star, and their brother station JACK.. How will Joe Chile and crew fend off this sudden onsluaght of competition...This will be a telling year for WJYE!!

Umm WJYE and Jack are owned by the same company CBS Radio, which includes WBUF, WBLK,WJYE and WYRK! I cant really call Jack a sister station to WJYE can I? (JACK-not to many sisters called Jack unless you live in hillbilly country) So Please explain the ????????????????????? Im a little confused as to how your reply relates to Joe Chile and freinds and the onsluaght of competition they now have?

As an impartial reader, the clarity of the original post breaks down due to the structure of the following sentence:

"...WHTT will no doubt be there (sic) biggest challenge, but also Star, and their brother station JACK..."

The sentence implies that Star and Jack are related or co-owned, even though the author explains his reasoning in a subsequent post. Here's a case when the use of call letters throughout the post might help to avoid creating a gender-bender when using metaphors such as "sister station" or "brother station."

Also, there should have been spelled "t-h-e-i-r" because it denotes possession. This is a common error, especially when hastily posting. I've fallen prey to it countless times.

"There," "they're" and "their" are easily confused.

I recognize White, but what color is Strunk?

He not only paints well, he's also a grammar guru!

The Color Strunk... Not Quite Purple

> He not only paints well, he's also a grammar guru!

Two years at ECC, three at Buffalo State, and Presto!

> Our resident coating application engineer is a man of many
> hidden talents.

Radio having been one of them, according to my past employers.

According to the color chart, "Strunk" is somewhere between "eggshell" and "dove white." It's best applied in satin water base, very lightly thinned, ("statin," if painting a doctor's office; "satan" if painting a hockey player's family room.)

The folks in the Rand Building have been too fat and happy for years. 2006 will indeed be their year for come-uppance.

WJYE will be hit hard, losing audience to WHTT. WJYE seems to play way too many ballads (just HOW many songs from Bette Midler and Whitney Houston are in their damn library??). The morning show lacks something..hmm..yeah, chemistry. The PM drive almost sounds voice-tracked. At least WHTT puts some personality into their delivery.

As far as JACK goes, well...it will go (eventually). Too hard, not enough audience appeal. If this format were a dartboard, the darts would not only hit the target all over the place, but also the wall, floor and celiing.

Finally, WECK going classic country is a real head-scratcher. Poor sales folks have to try and sell THAT!

It will indeed be a long year for CBS-Radio Buffalo.

Would I be correct in suggesting that it sounds alot like the Q102 of 1994.
"The Saturday nite Retro mix on Q 102"
If so, I hope it does really well. I was VERY ANGRY when Tom Fozzio(sp) took over, after eliminating Pete Berinni(SP?), then it was cancelled. Nothing wrong with Tom, but the Saturday nite retro mix was a very good reason to have the radio on.
______________

Hi Mike:

I usually agree wholeheartedly with your posts, but I'm going to take slight issue here. I like the way HTT sounds personality- and promotion-wise. And the music mic is, for the most part, uptempo and fun. However, from a purely personal standpoint I miss having a 60s-based oldies station in the market. I'm not in the primary oldies demo (I'm 44), but I've grown to love that music. I feel strongly that we don't need four stations playing burned-out 70s and 80s A/C as a large part of their format (JYE, HTT, Star and Jack). From a positioning standpoint, I'd rather have HTT focused on the Beatles, Stones, Motown, 60s Soul, etc. in a deeper way, without the insertion of Don Henley, Fleetwood Mac, or any of the dozens of songs they're now playing that have been ground to death by the other A/Cs in town.

KB's not a valid alternative (awful sound quality and every other record is a stiff; too much MOR and not enough rock 'n soul).

I know very well the demographic arguments why HTT sounds the way it does. I know there's no turning back. Just my .02.

The "new" WHTT

I like the "new" WHTT. I think they still have a pretty good representation of the '60s with a fair amount of Beatles, Motown, Guess Who, Grass Roots, Rascals, etc. It is the latter half of the '60s. Most of the girl groups, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly are gone. If there's a niche for KB to fill, that's it.

PS - Does ANYBODY miss Solid Grease Sundays?
