WHVW - 950AM Hyde Park, NY

My first job in radio was there from 1986 - 1989. The station was on Violet Avenue at the time. Anyone else work there or have any memories to share?

Hi dave!
Good to hear from you! I took over your shift in '89, you trained me on the board. Was Ed Roberts, Curt Roberts, CK lammly, and I believe Johnny walker was in there some place as was Jim Whaley. Different owner now; stick in the same place but Studios in Poughkeepsie. Drop me an email sometime; [email protected]

Hey Charlie,

When I started there right out of college in Aug of '86, Jim Thompson was the PD and morning guy. I believe Gary Zoefeld was doing production and mid-days, Johnny Walker was the afternoon guy. Rich Flaherty was the News Director...I know he later moved on to WHUD. Jim Whaley eventually came in to do mornings.

At first I was working Sunday mornings...live from sign on to maybe 9am. Then playing recorded programs such as the Irish Hour with Ken Gonyeah and the Italian Hour with Anna Antonelli.

Len, Joel, and Val came in as the owners...I worked my way up to regular fill-in, then mid-days and eventually program director before leaving in April of '89. That was a fun job...no money...but a fun job.

Jeff S. worked part time...I heard from him a few years back...also Ron S. was another great guy that worked there.

Let me know if you have updates on anyone else.

Best regards,

Dave

I wound up taking the sat and sunday nite 6-11 shifts and made them all request/ dedication oldies shows right after you left in 1989; at that time no one else had any local live request/ dedication oldies shows. 2 weeks after I started these shows CZX pulled Brucie's syndicated saturday night show off and went to request oldies. Imitiation is the sincerest form of flattery!! I then tweaked the sunday show to include special doo-wop and love song segments. All very well received by the listeners. At this point Len was out as GM, and the new GM, who shall remain un named, decided that Dick Bartley would do a better job on saturday nites, and they would get some freebies for running the show, so since I was not about to become a board monkey I packed it in. Said GM proceeded to run the station into the ground, using up all the restaurant trades for him and his buddies. Read: no cash $$$ coming in and so called sales people hanging around the place eating up the trades instead of being out selling advertising. Got like 500+ hours on the air. Boy what fun back then!!! Good folks to work with. Johhny walker died a few years ago at a young age of 56. Rich Flaherty is at the Pamal cluster in beacon; think Gary is also. And Sean O' Brien came in to do news; he was a cool guy from Connecticut who was well known in the business and had a lot of contacts; he was trying get the famous race car legend John Fitch on my show, but Sean passed away in the spring of '90. These folks treated me like a pro. As a part timer I will never forget the experience. Still do some local fill in work.

BTW, my thanks to Bart Dickley for cutting my radio career short.... :'(

Cheers ;D
