Hudson Valley WHVW Files Silent Notification With FCC

From Radio inside 950 WHVW Hyde Park has filed a silent notification with the FCC, citing transmitter issues. They just. replaced their original transmitter a couple of years ago with one from eastern Europe. Doesn't say much for WHVW that nobody noticed they were off the air.

I guess the market wasn't there for old 78 rpm records and obscure country songs along the four blocks you could actually hear the station. Pirate Joe did keep the station on the air for many more years than anyone would have guessed. It was obscure music and block programming that would attract no one. Joe found some friendly advertisers who "donated" to the cause, but the chances of it making enough money for him to buy a boat and retire off the Atlantic Coast was slim and none. Still it is sad. I have had a running joke with another old radio dinosaur about whether WHVW was on the air that day. We meet for lunch once a month or so, always on a Monday. Today is that scheduled lunch meeting and I'll have to find something eles to listen too on my ride to Poughkeepsie. WKIP still around? I hear it's barely audible while they "repair" one of its two towers.

WHVW is (was?) simulcast on shortwave WBCQ on some weekday afternoons. Also his "Shortwave Saturday Night" is still a thing, mostly political talk with some 78 music.

Update on WHVW silent notification. Apparently there is more to WHVW's problems than another transmitter failure. Joe Ferrao also sites financial trouble in his silent request to the FCC . It looks very much like this could spell the end of the once storied radio station. WHVW dominated the Mid Hudson Valley with it's small 500 watt daytime only station in the 60's to the mid 70's. It has passed through numerous owners since then ending up with Joe Ferrao who has kept it on life support with very little money for years. Below is the FCC filing

NOTIFICATION OF SUSPENSION OF OPERATIONS AND REQUEST FOR STAJOSEPH-PAUL FERRAROFRN: 0005017611FACILITY ID: 41870Licensee (“Licensee”) hereby submits this Notification of Suspension of Operations and Requestfor Silent STA commencing the date of November 1, 2024 due to issues involving the station’stransmitter. Licensee is seeking technical and financial assistance, and currently anticipates thatbroadcast operations will resume by March 15, 2025.

. Sadly I remembering them signing on the air on July 4, 1963. I did what I could to keep them going several years ago. New ATU, transmitter repair, along with other items. It took many months. As an engineer in commercial for 50 years, I felt obligated to help. I seemed to care more about the station than the owner did in my estimation. It is not about the money either. It is doing the right thing always. Hope they are able to recover.

I feel your pain in the sense of what I feel about old record stores closing. We all enjoyed them when they were relevant, but they no longer are. Nostalgia is great. Sadly WHVW is something that we remember from the days it had a purpose, but it has been irrelevant for many years. The market for obscure audio that only a handful of people care about has been owned by YouTube for most of the years Pirate Joe has owned "HV". To put a lot of money into returning it doesn't seem like a good investment, unless he enjoys his hobby that much.
