WHVW

It was technical difficulties and they were off for just under a day-tower lights and all. It does make you wonder though how he keeps everything running given his financial position these days.
 
How the mighty have fallen! How many of us remember when WHVW was a huge, flamethrowing top 40? It was the #1 station in the area in the early 1970's. Not bad for a 500 watt daytimer competing against the more powerful WEOK and WKIP.
 
I remember 950 WHVW being the local radio station, competing with the big boys WABC, NYC. At one point in the early seventies they had 51% of the listeners. WHVW played off of WEOK's sixties promo of having more power (5KW) than all other Mid- Hudson Valley stations combined , by saying " WHVW has more listeners than all other Mid-Hudson Valley stations combined!"
I believe current-day hobby station itineration of WHVW is still using their ancient original tube powered transmitter. It's not surprising something could fail on it and take a day or two to fix. As for the tower lighting, that must be a separate power source, and remain lit at all times. When driving past the old WHWW site in Hyde Park I have noticed the tower looks like it is in poor shape, with faded paint and many of the lights not working.
 
The WHVW tower was used when it was put up in 1963. Sooner or later everything will catch up to him. He has had plenty of offers to sell or LMA it; one prospective buyer even offered to set up a retirement account for him. He will let it die and not sell it. Too bad, I am convinced that WHVW could make money, but so far everyone who owned it the last 30 years has just run it further into the ground. I'm assuming that at least some of the mountain of Debt would go to a new owner.
Like Bucky said--it was the station in the 60's....top talent, tight format, good listener and advertising base, and they did live remotes...

I recall when they went on in early 60's. They even ran a talk-show with local talent back then. Too bad about debt. If your running a radio station or a hot-dog stand, the debt will kill you. Better to use the "bigger fool" theory and sell the station to a trustafarian.

Side comment: Does anyone recall when WEOK's AM tower (there were 3 as I recall) was knocked down? The incident was caused by a snow plower in the parking lot hitting one of the guy-wires.
