Why 11/2 For Steve & Vikki Goodbye?

I'm wondering why Star 94 didn't keep Steve & Vikki on the air until the end of November, and then play the best-of shows during December. I don't know what the station has planned for December.

Q100 is very smartly taking advantage of the S&V departure (i.e., "If you're looking for a new morning show,..."). It seems Star has given Q a nice 60-day opening to grab former S&V listeners.

I guess Star 94 has its reasons.

I guess Star 94 has its reasons.

Two questions:

1) If Q100 is going to make an attempt at former S&V listeners, will Bert Show try to widen appeal to 25-54 w/o losing their 18-34 target? You would think anyone who wanted to make the switch to Bert Show would have done so by now.

2) Is Q100 concerned that new Star 94 morning show (Marco, Shannon and Mikey) will give Q more direct competition for 18-34?

Agree with Caller 10. IMHO, the two shows are vastly different. I would think the change over effect would have already occured. I would expect Bert's spike in ratings from S&V's departure to be minimal. S&V's 25-54 listeners will probably migrate to B and wait for them to start playing Christmas music.

From what I've seen of their new morning show, it's pretty clear Star is going after the 18-34. How this plays out should be interesting. Then again, if Cume-less winds up with Star, all bets are off. Cumulus will obviously take care of the established show.

Everybody is assuming Kelly & Alpha are at Kinkos today, updating their resumes. Dont they do well in their demo? Seems like Rodney's last ratings blog had them holding their own.

As for cost, I bet Steve mcCoy makes more than the entire B98 morning show (and anyone else in the building at 9am) combined. Who is the highest paid Cox FM personality? Probably someone making $125k at the Beat. Dont know if this scenario is a slam-dunk.

The reason why they decided to leave November 2? Later this week, Star is doing its big Children's Healthcare radio-thon and neither Steve nor Vikki wanted to go through that. Mark Kanov would have liked to have kept them around through Thanksgiving.

Also, the Bert Show already has great 25-54 numbers so there's no need for them to have to adjust their show for them. In fact, they beat Steve & Vikki in those demos three of the past four books.

Yeah...contrary to the image oft-perceived on this board of Steve & Vikki's listeners jitterbugging to Steve Lawrence and Edye Gormet records...they're actually not deceased yet and like to hear people having fun on the radio. The assumption they'll go right to B and wait to sing along to Silver Bells might not be right.

They've undoubtedly heard of the Bert Show (which gets huge buzz, largely because they're media darlings), were probably switching back and forth in the morning between Star and Q anyway, and now have no reason whatsoever to spend time on Star.

I have a vague memory (because I grew up in Columbus, Ga. not Atlanta) so I could only pick up then CHR Z93 only some of the time, of hearing Steve McCoy doing morning on Z93 in the early 80s. Is that memory correct?

If Cume-less ends up with Star, IMHO if they were smart they would steer Star 94 more into a Hot AC and not even pretend to be a CHR, and leave Q100 alone (except for maybe migrating Q from 100.5 to 99.7). Does not having the S&V team on the balance sheet (with Vikkie Locke's contract expired, and Steve McCoy's and other morning team members contracts not be renewed whenever they're coming up) make Star more appealing to be sold, assuming that the expense of the morning show was out of line with falling 25-54 performance and revenues generated that would be attributed to S&V?

One other thought, Bert Show doing the "Big Thank You" to our Armed Forces with PR on both Fox News and CNN during S&V's last week, is great marketing and great timing. Although I don't doubt Bert and team's sincerity to that cause.

Caller 10, the answer to your Steve McCoy/Z93 question is yes.

There is absolutely no way that B98.5 will hire Steve & Vikki. B98.5 has a whole different philosophy, meaning mornings are music intensive. B98.5's program director, Paul Cilliani, is said to have a coronary whenever music isn't playing (outside of commercials). I have heard this from people in the know at Cox Radio. And I have personal knowledge from trying to arrange a Kelly & Alpha interview of Bernie Marcus as part of a Georgia Aquarium buy that I placed on the station. Note WSB's proximity to Piedmont Hospital.

The unknown in where Steve McCoy (or Steve & Vikki) will end up is what format 92.9 and 99.7 (or 100.5) will have in 6 or 8 months. Will CBS flip 92.9 to a mainstream or hot AC? Will 99X finally be put to sleep and open another hole for an AC?

I bet Steve will end up on either 92.9 or 99.7/100.5.

there are a lot of unemployeed radio djs who would be on 92.9/99.7 way before they consider that skeleton McCoy

I'm guessing by your use of "dj"...you're one of the unemployed. Still guessing, but it seems
by that post that you're not even qualified to listen to radio.
McCoy may be too old for 13 years olds...I'll give you that...but your post is revealing.
DJ? where did you get that...from WKRP reruns? you do realize WKRP was a (bad) fictional account?

Well said, romer979fm, and I meant to add that before anyone makes any kind of decision on hiring Steve McCoy, all aspects of his value as an air personality will be taken into account, not the least of which will be the sponsorships and client relationships he has cultivated from his quarter-century in this market.

He's a great "DJ," as deadman called him, but he's much more than that. He's a great communicator, he's believable, and millions of Atlantans grew up with him. Plus, he's highly respected for both his on-air work and his charity work, and on top of it all, he's an ego-free nice guy.

He's an asset all around and the best free agent currently on the market.

Yes, I'm a fan, but then I always pull for the good guys.

But few with a 25-year track record of success in the same market.

Even Star didn't care about that when it came to giving him the boot!
