Why 1964?

I'm not going to ramble on anymore about this, because frankly, it's unfortunate that 90% of the hits don't get aired and it's rediculous! It is what it is, even though many of us cannot agree.

Which is exactly why my radio listening has switched from Oldies/Classic Hits to a much more open playlist which goes back into the 50's and includes many songs which are not specific to RnR. It also explains why my mp3 player and PC library contains a huge number of those songs that never get played.

This thread was originally a discussion of 1964. Remember Ringo, Hello Dolly, Mr. Lonely, Everybody Loves Somebody and There I've Said It Again? I hope you do, because these are five number-one hits from what is arguably the mostest bestest year for music...and they're ignored by classic hits stations in 2013.
I remember hearing "Ringo" ONLY when a local announcer did a daily chronological countdown of all the #1 hits from the '50s to (then) the '70s. Even he said that he didn't think that he had heard it since it was popular. The others on your list I used to hear from time to time, but I don't think that I ever hear any of them anymore.

Ringo did get some airplay on the original oldies stations, I can remember WFMV Blairstown NJ playing it, and it wasn't on a specialty program or a countdown.

Ringo is an essential song in my station playlist.
I can't imagine life without hearing Ringo OR the theme from "Bonanza", at least once a month or so.

Then I will make you happy by quoting one of my favorite lines from the Cartwrights' overworked housekeeper: "Four people alla time yelling! Only one Hop Sing!"

It would be more interesting to know why a hit song then is not a playable song now.

Heck, any song is playable today, every last one of them. The reason why 90% of them get ignored is listener preferences, based on music testing and scoring that David and Michael Haggerty have countered with (the business side of things). I've said this before and I will say it again: "Every song is somebody's favorite"

Not everyone likes the same songs, that are heard on radio on any particular station, at any given time. Some tune away, most stay on.

Many complain about lack of quality music, frequent repetition and lengthy stop-sets, but other posters mention that as a result of testing, the results are replicated, meaning that since most will generally choose positives for frequently heard songs, others will do the same as a whole, so those are the songs that radio will play and nothing else.

My argument is that how can a test of 100 participants represent the entire listnener base for that station? How? How can 100, represent 1,000,000? They mention replication. I still don't understand the in's and out's of that theory, but that process is insisted.

This argument has gone on for years on these boards and I'll never get, as to how 100 can represent a population of one million. Everyone has their favorites and many of those songs do not get aired, that's a fact. Who says that an opinion of 100 can decide what the other 999,900 will want to listen on such station? That's absurd. I hear many complaints about the songs that are never aired, or personal hit favorites that are not in rotation.

Preacher...Choir. I'll carry on your rambling for you. It sickens me that a handfull of people "represent" the masses. Didn't David say something like only 15 meters on reflected the #1 LA station...WHAT!?!?!?

Anywho, 1964----- I no longer here any of the Motown greats - "Where Did Our Love Go" and "My Guy" - used to be overplayed, but now there in the trash and I want them out.

Really only the Beatles continue with airplay.

This afternoon I heard the Supremes/Temptations, I'm Gonna Make You Love Me. That song of course post-dates our 1964 window, but that same station rotates plenty of Mowtown, much of it from '64.

You know what I would love to hear? "Oh golly gee, Steve, no---please tell me!" I'd love to hear Dee Dee Warwick's original version of I'm Gonna Make You Love Me. It peaked at #88 in December of 1966. (Dee Dee was Dionne's younger sister.) In March of 1968, Madeline Bell got to #26 with a remake. Then came the Supremes/Temptations version, which got to #2 (behind Marvin Gaye's I Heard It Through The Grapevine).

Funny you should mention Warwick's. Heard it this weekend (online of course) at PopGoldRadio.com --- sorry for the plug (I'm not associated I swear :) )

Well in my market (Chicago) Motown got the boot. Save for a few on weekends at an urban station. Glad to hear they're still around elsewhere. I am a HUGE Motown freak (esp. Supremes/Temptations --- no finer records than that 8) )
