Why 95.7 Sports May Work

probably even with the bad ratings, sports bill's better then country ever did on the two times it was on the 95.7 frequency.

Hmmm... Not sure about that. A lot of the ads on 95.7 are national, not local.

Someone explain to me how this station is still on the air. The aired the NCAA champ game tonight and last night, they aired an out of market baseball game. Their hosts are boring, predictable and can't interview worth a damn. When you consider that when the frequency was country music, it was getting better ratings, I just don't get it. They would be better off just simulcasting ESPN programming whenever an A's game isn't being played.

It's unfortunate since they started off well. Lund and the rotating host thing seemed to keep things fresh. Now with Papa everyday, he just sounds like a bad impression of Raddy. Davis and Tierney could be fun to listen to since Davis would spend half the show putting Tierney in his place. Townsend solo evenings was great. Paired with Bucher now instead of Tierney and Davis, he's become adolescent and lazy. The new evening host Guy Haberman is just a train wreck doing nothing but playing clips from all the earlier shows. The 10am-noon guys may be the worst sports radio ever made.

I've tried to give them a chance but between the awful hosts and the all the rehashed content, I just can't listen to them. It's too bad since KNBR could use competition so they might spend a little time covering something other than the Giants and Niners 24/7.

How long before you think 95.7 is onto something else? Once their contract with A's runs out after next season, if that long?

Couldn't agree more, and I've voiced it a couple of times here already. While overall, I like KNBR, I would also love to have an alternative at times, but nothing has changed my view of "The Game" as "The Lame". I like Greg Papa a lot, and miss him on "Chronicle Live", but paired with Lund, it's like listening to high school sophomores with their brand of humor. Davis made "The Drive" listenable but Tierney was awful, at least for this region. I'm not a fan on "Towny" and am unsure of why he's always yelling, but I have to say the pairing of him with Bucher (who I don't care for generally) is an improvement. They at least seem to have some on-air chemistry that gives the show some energy. But, like "The Wheelhouse", at times it sounds like adolescent boys, especially with bits like "the G spot" and the "Happy Ending". Guys, you really think that's amusing? When you're 13 it probably is. Not as grown adults. And "The Guru"? Ugh. Awful. I hope the winners of Lucky Break 2 can do better, though that's not setting the bar very high.

As for them changing formats, I don't think it would have to coincide with the end of the A's contract. I doubt the contract includes anything about requiring the station to be a sports station. They could easily switch to any music format (personally I'm hoping for smooth alternative polka ska metal) and continue carrying the A's. After absolutely zero progress in the ratings after what, 2 years, you'd think they'd want to try something else. Anything else. Please.

Another ratings release and 95.7 continues to flatline. While KNBR dropped .5, the Game still struggles at .08 for the second consecutive month. If memory serves, the Wolf regularly averaged 1.2 during it's brief run. Does Entercomm not care or are they waiting for their PD's contract to expire?

The GSM there the last 5 years has just returned to KNBR as General Sales Manager, where he had previously been LSM. You connect the dots.

so much for them flipping formats, they have just announced they are the new radio home of the raider's.

Does that mean anything? KUFX is the home for the Sharks yet play classic rock when the Sharks aren't on. I'm sure KGMZ could switch to a different format while still airing the A's and Raiders games. If they switched to ESPN syndication, they would probably get better ratings anyway.

Big differences between airing hockey and baseball on a music station. The Sharks don't play everyday like the A's basically do. Baseball broadcasts take up a minimum of 5 hours airtime between pre-game, actual game and post-game. Baseball games frequently air during mid-days or afternoon drive when the A's play in the midwest or east coast. If KGMZ were to switch to a music format and still try to air A's and Raiders, the station would be crippled from the beginning. Entercom appears to be fully committed to doing sports on 95.7 for the next several years.

...And I thought Z95.7 was going to make a comeback? I hope not!!!

KGMZ is now the flagship station of the Oakland Raiders. I doubt 95.7 The Game is going away very soon.

Well, there are a couple things to consider. After the A's finish this season, there are only 2 more left on their deal. I would also imagine that there is some verbiage that lets the Raiders out of their broadcast deal with the Game if they move. And I don't think it's a far fetched idea that the Raiders may move in the next couple of years should the right deal happen for them in LA or elsewhere.

While it's nice to see Entercomm trying with the A's and Raiders rights, there's no way this station ever does better than they currently are if they continue with the current hosts.

It probably doesn't matter because the games themselves bring in boatloads of money. Some stations present games and don't have any sportstalk at all, such as KKSF Talk910.

Boatloads of money? Not to the stations. Having carried one of the teams named above, I can tell you we didn't get a dime, and very limited avails to sell in and around the games. The main draw is the cume they bring to your station, and ability to build other programming around them. Sorry.

Oh...I misspoke. I'd forgotten that so many game broadcasts today are produced by the teams themselves or by outside producers and given for barter or what have you. For some reason I was thinking back to the days when stations produced their own broadcasts (such as when KSFO had the Giants, etc).

The Raiders' PBP is done by an outfit called, IIRC, Compass Media. The local station is "flagship" in name only - it's just another affiliate for all intents and purposes.

Evil 501 used to do a pre-pre-game show from the parking lot ("Raiderville"), but that was a totally separate production with its own ISDN (or maybe POTS) line, contracted out to an outside engineer directly by the station. Compass ran purely from the press box.
