Why are Bob and Tom so popular?

I've wondered this for years. Why do they get the ratings they get? They aren't that funny, they're piped in from out of town and they laugh at every line they say. Opinions?

I could not agree with you more. I boycott them because they are not local and i dont like classic rock!!! Just like the kane show on 98.9 i boycott. They replaced rocky and troy for bob and tom what a mistake!!! I know this is the way things are now but it just isnt right!!!

I think ben and kelly on djx have an awesome show and so does rocky and troy.I think the ramsey brothers are entertaining but light 106.9 neds to be rebranded. I say they should go up against the max.

Lambert and lindsey i use to like more. George doesnt do his rapster piece theatre anymore  Seems like the morning show on the max isnt quite as good as it use to be.

As someone who has listened to Bob And Tom off and on over the years, I wish I could give a definite answer.

Here are a few reasons I've tuned in:

1. They do get some pretty good guests.

2. The recuring characters (Kenny Tarmac, Donny Baker) are comical at times. A lot of their stuff is rehashed, but they hit the mark every now and again.

3. They have some really good comedians who drop by the studio.

I try to listen to local morning shows but, for whatever reason, I latched onto Bob and Tom and they've just stuck.

They're a lot like Nickelback...you don't want to admit you listen to them, but you also have all their CDs.

When B+T first came to town, they replaced "The Big Dumb Show" on the Fox with Gonzo Greg. The year was 1995.

They don't get ratings everywhere. These guys replaced an 18-year morning show on a heritage rock station in my area a few years ago and were a disaster from which the station has never recovered. I gave them a shot on my drive to work (about 45 minutes) and never came back. They were sooooo typical. Talking all over each other with a constant cackling person in the background. They were gone from the station within a year.

Now, on another station in the market, we have "Free Beer and Hot Wings." If anyone could be more abysmal than Bob and Tom, these guys are it.

That same thing happened on 'SFR when they picked up Lex & Terry. They drove that station into the ground fast because of their fouled mouth comedy. 'SFR did recover, but has never let their morning talent talk very much... They focus on the music.

I remember Troy telling me (a couple of times) that he felt stiffled at 'SFR because the management wouldn't let him tell jokes or do skits.

That's right. Forgot about that.

When B&T first came to Lexington, many years ago, they replaced Kruser, a long-time and popular Morning fixture on WKQQ (when it was on 98.1--before The Bull bumped Double Q to the more inferior 100.1 frequency). Kruser later landed on WVLK doing afternoon talk, where he remains to this day...

I *Tried* to listen to them years ago, but I have never been able to get past their annoying fake and forced laughter about EVERY.SINGLE.THING.THEY.TALK.ABOUT.... Ugh!!!

Who let these guys into a radio studio????

I've listened to bad comedy before and forced talk radio, but it amazes me that these guys continue to have an audience.

I'll take listening to a college or high school station over their so called "Entertainment"...

I enjoyed them for a bit, but after a couple of months, it became to repetitive. I also started to think that the laughing was a track because Bob's laugh was always the same....

I did, however, catch their highlight show they used to have on WGN-TV. It gave me a new perspective of the show and I did enjoy watching them interact with the guest....but once again, after a month, it became repetitive after seeing the same person show up on Monday, etc.....

I grew up in North Central Indiana and listened to Bob and Tom on WFBQ-Q95, Indianapolis, from 8th Grade up to the time that I joined the Air Force. They were hilarious back then; but all of their humor was local. Frequent guests included Champ car drivers as B&T were always doing Indy 500 related stuff. The Electric Amish Band was another staple.

Seems as time went by, they got excellent writers, booked lots of comedians that were also appearing on Carson, Leno, and Letterman. I used to have my mom and sister send me Q95 merchandise and B&T CDs. Every year they would put one out during the Indy 500 season and one right before Christmas.

Once they went syndicated, the humor wasn't as good as I remember and most of the humor was interacting with touring comedians that were making the rounds. I could hear a comedian one day on B&T and a few days the same comedian would appear on John Boy and Billy.

Like 'em or not; One thing is for sure...they have had an excellent run.

Just as most male 25 and up targeted mornings go.... Howard, Bob & Tom, John Boy & Billy (which was at least thoughtful and less of the first mentioned), tends to bring out the phalic-fifth grade-humor that the grown males desire (and their wives think is horrible)... Meanwhile the girls of the same, reach out to to their PMS version of the same.. Just a different language and sexual gender spin....... ;D Oh, the guys listen to the their wives morning jest and say; "Uhhhh??? I don'git'et?" ???

Once upon a time, Indy had an excellent morning show. Very local, relevant and left in the competition in the dust. The race was for #2 in Indy for morning.

In the early 90's, Indy lost that morning show to syndication. Gone were the road trips to a politicians office to make a point. Gone were the trips to the state fair, etc. Instead, Indy was left with generic programming aimed to the outside masses. What a shame! I miss Bob and Tom!
