Why Are Most Radio Stations Formatted Towards Females??

I have always wondered why 90% of radio stations are formatted for females or their target demo are women?? Sorry that's the same thing. Anyway.... Guys only get rock and sports?? Why wouldn't guys want to listen to Hot 107.9?? They play Gucci, 2 Chainz...etc.. Are straight guys suppose to not listen to Q100 or Power 96?? I could understand Star 94 or B98.5....that would be gay.....lol....i just don't understand why the most popular genres in radio are all supposed to be for women....someone explain please!!

Most of the clubs I go to let women come in for free too.

Women are pretty, smell much better, and generally determine the buying habits of the family. That last one is probably the reason. Although they earn big points for smelling better.

For the same reason over 90% of retail space is targeted towards females. They buy stuff. Advertisers want to sell them stuff.

That's exactly right. When target audiences are determined, they are based on who actually buys the product. For example, everyone in the family uses toothpaste. But the woman is the one who makes the purchase decision.

That said, 90% of radio stations is quite an exaggeration. In the Atlanta market, WSB, Rock 100.5, 97-1 The River and 92-9 The Game are targeted to men. Formats such as country and all-news tend to be about 50%/50% male/female. Kiss 104 is about 50% male/50% female. WABE is slightly more male. Regional Mexican (Hispanic) is very male. And contrary to what was said above, Hot 107-9 is around 60% male.

There are obviously a number of products that are purchased more by men.

Am I the only one taking issue with this completely idiotic and ignorant statement?!? Seriously, I can understand how Star, Q and B are targeted towards women, BUT that doesn't mean only women CAN or DO listen to it. Songs like "Everybody Talks" or "Ho Hey"- which are hot on all these stations, are listenable for both sexes...as is Duran Duran or some other gold 80s band played more specifically on B98.5.

Personally, as a pop music and Alternative fan in my 50s, I happen to enjoy the music played in the office...which lately has been Radio 105.7, B98.5, or Star94.

Yeah, somehow I missed that lol

Out of Q100 and Star 94, I'd say Star would probably have a larger male audience, since there's more Alt/Rock on their playlist (and no Justin Bieber), at least at night

You have to wonder if the higher Alt ratio at night is due to Orff DJ'ing at that time because of his experience at Dave.

I think it's pretty common, though, for HAC male listenership to go up at night - that's probably why Star put him in that timeslot

I think that they're gonna lose a lot of that male audience to 105.7, though

Relax it was suppose to be a joke..... I swear people are so damn uptight. The Earth is still spinning right??

I was making light of the reference that only soccer moms listen to Star and B

As was stated earlier, it all has to do with buying power. Radio (or all media for that matter), is all about selling advertising, and companies are interested in reaching the demos that will actually buy their products. It's a proven fact that women make an overwhelming majority of daily purchases in a household. The main exceptions being larger priced items such as cars & houses. But as far as most day to day things, it's something like 70/30 as far as who buys more items. So naturally, this audience is much more attractive to advertisers, and in turn to radio companies. It's all about having ratings in a "sellable demo". That's why you can have decent ratings on some stations but still they aren't able to convert that into sales (for example, formats targeting 55+ seniors. They are on a set budget & are set on their spending patterns & brand loyalty, so no matter how many listeners you have, advertisers aren't that interested. They would rather have a smaller piece of the coveted 25-54 or 18-34 female demo group because that's where spending choices are being made).

Which apparently can be successfully appealed to by having a man play the stooge in a commercial.

I don't think that's true, though - both have plenty of male callers

Power is targeted to 18-34 females, so listening to that station isn't any less "gay" - if anything, dance-leaning music has the reputation for being more gay-friendly

I am surprised at Kiss' audience composition; I was expecting more female than male since it is an urban ac. That format has a higher focus on women based on these factors: 1) many women are more into a smooth vibe of music than men, 2) many of them are educated and don't want to deal with music they feel degrades them, 3) many women feel relaxed when they hear their fav male R&B artist like Luther Vandross, R. Kelly or Ginuwine, and 4) Atlanta has a number of Black entrepreneurs and some female business owners want to be able to enjoy Kiss, Majic, or V-103 to an extent while on the job.

In the case of Hot 107.9, males in the urban sect are more into hip-hop and rap than they are R&B. Same can be said for Streetz 94.5. That's why both play less R&B than V-103 would play, mainly due to the negative perception among some that being into R&B as a Black man is considered gay in some circles today.

The last part is so freaking silly notion considering how many black gay and bisexuals are in Atlanta. :D Anyways, V-103 has even the lead on both Hot 107.9 and Streetz 94.5 when it comes to breaking new hip-hop songs yet they target more females than males with their dayparted and R&B-heavy playlist. I've always been under the impression that educated black females enjoy hip-hop, but they just don't like to listen club-oriented hip-hop during the day like Hot and Streetz does all day, everyday. They only want to hear it in smaller doses rather than all the time.

Not a bad hypothesis. Here's another: Most media planners and media buyers are women.
