Why are The End's and Click's ratings down?

I thought for a city like Seattle with its heritage Grunge/alternative rock status that The End (and maybe Click and The Mountain) would be in the Top 10 of the Arbitrons, but instead, they have 2 shares. Why is that?

KNDD lives off it's past grunge glory.

KMTT is on life support.

KLCK-FM was poorly planned, poorly launched and poor in consistency. (Is it alternative? Is it Hot AC?)

These formats need larger budgets and creative breathing room. They don't see much of either.....

That's why.

Where is the budget lacking at those stations, and where exactly would you spend the money from a larger budget?

A full live/local airstaff....for starters......

And....?

While I would enjoy knowing I'm listening to live and local talent (still KZOK, right), I don't think most listeners really care, do they? I mean, at least on FM, listeners are listening primarily for the music, aren't they? With the possible exception of mornings. I'm sure somebody out there has some type of research, stats, etc., to back my theory up.

And then again, isn't this kind of why Alternative radio as a whole is dying? Lack of execution, lack of promotion from record labels? That's all I can think of.

I swear every time I tune into Click it's a song by Adele, Cee-Lo Green, or Coldplay. They haev a noticeably worse playlist than any other station playing "modern alternative" music.

I listened to KNDD this morning and it's strange. This is supposed to be where all the NEW and cutting edge music is supposed to be, but I swear I only heard a handful of re-currents in a sea of 20 year old Weezer, Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Smashing Pumpkins songs.

C'mon! This is KZOK fodder by now......

KLCK-FM honestly had it's place in it's alternative incarnation and THAT is why. They were FAR more up to date than KNDD is. But the chronic repetition, Hot AC and execution (and I mean EXECUTION) have completely ruined it........

This is starting to describe their sister station, 94/7 fm in "Camas" (Portland) as well. I can't believe we're still without one 'butt rock' station in the Portland area.

Hey Larry, are you going to respond to my question from the last page on what else you would spend on a larger budget for the station?

Until someone gives me such budget, a decent salary and a major Seattle FM station, keep guessing......

I'm not asking you how much money, which companies to use or who you would hire. I'm only asking what, in the most general of terms, you would spend money on.

Alright Larry, I know this will go down the same path we have gone down before, so I'll just cut to the chase.

The point is that there are many, many other things good radio stations spend money on. Other things, such as marketing and promotions, are essential but are rarely discussed here because they're not as tangible as things like air talent.

The bottom line is that just throwing money at something is not always the right answer. Sometimes fixing what you're already doing is the best way to go. You have to be smart about what you do with the money, and just hiring live and local air talent will not take the station to the next level.

Just checked the recently released Holiday book. Click is at a 1.8. This is not good...full-blown Alternative would be a wise choice for 98.9, but Maynard probably won't go that way.
