Why Aren't There Any Christian Oldies Stations? (revisited)

gr8oldies, I don't always agree with you but in this case you're right. For me personally, yeah, I'd love a Christian oldies station because I became a Christian in 1974 and was heavily influenced by contemporary Christian music starting in 1973. My love for CCM music made me want to go into CCM radio, rather than secular radio and I'm VERY familiar with the early groups and artists. But before Fall quarter, 1973, I had no clue what CCM was. When I bought the LP by Ron Salsbury I put it on my turntable along with Led Zeppelin, Yes, Chicago, etc. I would say MOST people aren't aware that contemporary Christian music exists until they became a follower of Jesus. Those of us who are familiar with 70s & 80s Christian music are an enthusiastic, but small group. Enough for a web site but not for a radio station.

In my assessment the best places where this could probably work besides Nashville would be Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles.

Check into the history of CCM radio in Chicago. A homebase for JPUSA means nothing.
 
Chicago also used to have the #1 Christian radio station in the Country back in the 1980's. I am not an expert on this by any means, I am just thinking of possible areas where the format could work.

In the 80s? Are you talking about WCFL, the first incarnation of CCM on 106.7 or that class A FM mom 'n pop that Jim Channell worked for in the suburbs? That audience was miniscule even for #1 in the country . I don't recall any of them ever reaching a consistent one share 12+. I can cite a handful of others. There was a great CCM rocker in Orange County California. WXLN was all music in Louisville. No matter. As John Styll once told me in those days it wasn't critical mass. I really dig your passion for this Retro but bluntly radio is not going to gamble on an oldies based format of music very few of us know. For those of us who love early CCM that's a tough pill to take. I guess thats why I have my iPod. It's playing Stonehill's cover of "Your Love Broke Through" right now.
 
Maybe I should invest in an Ipod, but for now I will settle for Crosswalkplus.com Oldies that they have.

Yes, I guess it was Jim Channel. I did not know that he was involved with it, just that they were going to put out a Christian magazine (which I wonder if they ever did) and that they were looking for subscribers.

I heard the term #1 Christian station on his then syndicated show "Christian Countown America."
 
The Prodigal (http://www.theprodigalradio.com) has been rotating our most familiar in the process of building cume instead of TSL. We want every other song to be a mega hit so as new listeners sample...they'll think, "Oh, I remember this song!"

Every week we continue to increase the library & tweek. Unfortunately, there's hasn't been a lot of research on this format...so we are learning as we go.
