Why bother listening to Conservative talk?

It's been known for a long time but many don't want to believe it: People go to the media for confirmation, not information. A whole body of social science research shows this to be true, even among people who claim it's not true for them. The mechanisms at work are:

Selective attention (people pay attention to what they agree with).
Selective perception (people see what they want to see)
Selective recall (people remember what they choose to remember)

It's funny. The more the mainstream media claim to be objective, the less credibility they have. Various polls have found that news media are trusted about as much as lawyers and car dealers. When newspapers had a point of view and made no pretense of being other than than partisan, people held them higher regard. But newspapers decided they could do better in ad sales by trying to appeal to everybody. Fox News and talk radio are simply journalism returning to its roots from the days of Hearst and Pulitzer.

And media have never let "facts" get in the way of the story.

Well, I guess I am the one odd-ball in the entire world then, Fred.

I regularly read from and listen to (isn't that interesting language construct!) sources and media from both sides.

I get equally as upset when a source I agree with is obviously playing word games as I do when a souce I disagree with is obviously "stacking the deck of cards".

I worked as a journalist in what had to be the most un-partisan news operation in Midwestern broadcasting.

I practically became a para-legal so my company could save some billing from our chosen law firm, which was amazingly scrupulous and would NOT let me play games as I pilfered through the company files complying with demands that we produce documents. I reject you suggestion that "We know all lawyers are crooks!' That is what you were saying, wasn't it?

I was computer system administrator for a car dealer who was an interesting character... But was way up there on the ethical dealings scale. I think you were suggesting such a creature did not exist?

You must be one "hard to please" dude. ;D

I am saying most people don't trust lawyers. So-called "legal ethics" is not what seems ethical to most people. And lawyers know how to stay within the law, so they avoid being crooks. Besides, Nixon was a lawyer. He told us he was not a crook. Didn't you believe him?

As I said, everybody thinks they are the exception. I recommend some texts in social psychology, persuasion and attitude change or media theory and research.

I think you get a much clearer image of the conservative talk audience by listening to the commercials than the programs. All you hear are ads for mail-order crotch boosters, "Buy gold now, the sky is falling!" and canned food designed to last 20 years in your bomb shelter. If that doesn't paint a picture of their audience, what does? And you goddam kids get off of my lawn!! ;)

People have a difficult time accepting reality when it rocks their world. People didn't want to believe that Nixon was a crook. Same thing with conservatives and liberals not wanting to believe that our government is spying on them and violating the constitution. Limbaugh, Maddow, Hannity, and company won't touch the subject as they are in favor of the new police state.
So much for independent thinking.

Getting back to Limbaugh, Maddow, Hannity, and company, they will continue to oppose each on petty little things but in the end, all these talk shows hosts will be in agreement with regarding major policies such as more US led wars in the middle east, continued eroding of our constitutional rights, etc. So much for independent thinking.

Josh, if you brought any credibility with you when you kicked off this thread, you lost it in this particular post.

How can you put Maddow in the same basket with Limbaugh and Hannity? You do ever watch her show?

A truly CENTRIST person might say she is as far "left" and the other two are "right". But beyond their differences in political stance, Maddow's logic process is so different from the logic process of those on the right that their difference are far from PETTY.

You say they are all equally eroding our constitution rights. Are they the eroders? Or are they the observers and reporters?

Also box stores, car dealers, realtors, dining, cable companies, cell carriers, bedding and banks.

But yeah, just pretend those per inquiry advertisers aren't on all spoken word formats. But yeah, carry on.

Hi Great Radio Cowboy:

Please watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fie5CpZmMsg

A play on words if you please: "Josh, you've got to be 'joshing me'.

You watch this cute chick on RT Now, where RT stands for "Russia Today".

from Wikepedia

RT, previously known as Russia Today, is an international multilingual Russian-based television network. It is registered as an autonomous non-profit organization[2][3] funded by the federal budget of Russia through the Federal Agency on Press and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation.[4][5]

So we have this cute little chick who apparently prostitutes out as a host and propagandist for Russia.... so we can obviously trust her to properly evaluate everything and everybody in America!

I may have been born at night, Josh, but as we say out in the country, It wasn't LAST NIGHT!

The floor is yours. Give me some biography and facts as to why I should believe anything Abby Martin says.
