Why bother?

Hey WBLM, why bother running the Patriots broadcasts if you're not going to do it right? The game on Saturday was a joke ... in particular the post game show. I loved the "the game's not on local tv so come watch it with us at ........" spots. What was it, WEDNESDAY that the game was made available on network TV? Not enough time to recut? How about the post game? 10-15 minutes of spots in a row before going to music while other stations carrying the Pats were awake enough to carry Tom Brady's press conference after an historic 16th win. YOU might not care enough to carry the game PROPERLY but there are many, many people who listen to the games and are passionate about the team. You're teamed up with an incredible brand in the Patriots. The least you could do is hold up your end of the deal.

How hard is it to board op? Whoever the clown in there was was missing id's, local breaks and coming back in late. Most of us board op'ed Sox games by the age of 17 and pulled it off better than the mighty Blimp.

Just do us a favor .... pretend to care about your on air product just a little.

it's not just WBLM...i've noticed it on B98.5 in Waterville and 103.7 from Mount Washington (all Citadel stations that run the Pats)...I wonder if other Citadel stations bail out on the post game or sound as crappy as the 3 I listed, the 2 Bangor stations carry the broadcast in full and actually time out their breaks correctly (Cumulus' WWMJ 95.7 has the contract, Clear Channel's 101.7 WFZX had it until last season)

This is the problem with BLM. They simply don't care and the station sounds like it each and every day. They have never been able to get off the carpet since the body punch from Frank OVER THREE YEARS AGO. WMGX went down and came back as a Hot AC. Is is working for them? I think so.

BLM just had the General Sales Manager quit to take a significantly lesser income paying job oh by the way. Why was that? Fed up? Maybe.

BLM's whole postioning is that the are legendary. The question is, legendary to whom? They're old, they're tired, and they sound completely beat. They're entire programming strategy is two fold:

1. Let's play really obscure rock songs that no one wants to listen to so we can say how deep our CD library is.
2. Open up the mike and talk as long as you want to - especially you weekenders who shouldn't be on the air on a Dunkin Donuts drive thru.

It's the equivalent of the Pats bringing back Drew Bledsoe to play quarterback. I'm sure he's legendary in his mind too.

Worse yet is that this translates over to WCYY who apparently decided that Opie and Anthony suck too much that they're better off having the Astrology Charts read every morning. No wonder Free Beer and Hot Wings have a 22 or something share in morning drive.

Herb - and I'm sorry to say this, but it's time you went and became Doc's (Bob Fuller's) fulltime gardner. You do take care of his house in Maine don't you?

A scathing but well deserved thread. It beats another post by Joe McMillan.

As far as positioning goes: does legendary really matter to most listeners? Nope.

When I was a jock I prided myself in running a clean tight board even during sports broadcasts. It was my job. Further more, I was always afraid the PD would kick my ass because I screwed things up! Ya see kids, the PD actually had time to listen to his stations in those days but then that was the late 60’s and early 70’s when owners cared about their property.

And ad buyer – loved your line about Bob Fuller!

It does seem like we have become twins but you're right:

Joe - it's time to pull back the posts. You have 42,000 of them over the past two months. It's great that you are picking up some much needed cash doing imaging for Kiss in Bangor, but promoting your own adverting web-site and saying how great Kiss sounds will get you in more conflict of interest problems than anything else. Either become an account executive with them or become OBJECTIVE. Trying to play both ends against the middle here, (being an Ad Agency Guy and exclusively promoting, or worse placing, your clients business on that station, will get you OUT OF BUSINESS quicker than you could ever imagine.)

Bob Fuller rocks

Herb needs to learn how to prune.

Three Fer needs to learn that just because you SAY the Kansas City Royals Rock!!! they're still the Kansas City Royals and George Brett has long since retired...as has Amos Otis, Hal McCrae, Dennis Leonard, Paul Splitorff, John Mayberry, Freddie Patek

ALONG WITH: Herb Ivy, Tommy C, and Brian James....who also last had their big hits long before Oxycodone became a drug of choice.

AD BUYER..MEDIA BUYER
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm SURE I must have worked with YOU FINE!!
Folks in the PAST!!! GOD BLESS YA!!!
ALL THE BEST IN 2008
JOE MC MILLAN

I was looking for rock music on sat night as I was hanging in the plymouth Vt area, WVRR rock 101.7 did both 3 hrs of pre game and I believe post game as well.
a few questions-
Any guesses why they did this
where the hell is the studios for it?
White River?

What I think is interesting is that with the Bone (possibly) going under, Herb et al will think it's because of the kick-ass job THEY do. Keep living in the past, fellas!

And that's the problem...

If The Bone doesn't go away, BLM gets to go back to being the Miami Dolphins of Portland Radio...

Hey Farid - ever think of bringing Bill Parcells to Portland. Now that would be awesome and exactly what Citadel needs!!!

In fairness to Citadel's 103.7 out of NH, that's the station I tuned to upon leaving 102.9. They stuck with the entire postgame including the Coach, Brady and Moss press comments.

It sounds as though the board op just decides they are sick of Patriots coverage, it IS several hours in length, and jumps back to music. I'm not sure where a part time board op gets the nerve to do that but that's what it sounds like.

I feared this thread would turn into a 'BLM bashing fest and that was not my intent. Slamming DJ's and such. My intent was to express to those in a position to do something about it, and they DO read this board, that some of us DO care to listen to the entire broadcast.

Maybe there is something though to the WBLM/WCYY way of doing things. WCYY used to dump out of Opie and Anthony at 8:55 every morning in mid conversation ... fire an ID and then into music and Tarot readings. Another topic for another time.

Want to hear the sound of someone not caring? Check out a Pats game on WBLM.

WPNH used to carry the Pats way back when, and it wasn't always easy nailing the breaks. It takes the board op to be as dedicated to listening to the game as any fan would. That being said, they were usually very good with supplying very obvious outcues. Problem is, you got a cluster? Multitasking is the name of the game, and you might try to skate away and handle another station, and oh no what's this? A fumble? Didn't expect that! Gotta run to the... oops too late.

I got better with experience, but sometimes they messed up, and once and a while Boston ads would show up on our air product. The games I always screwed up were Red Sox baseball. Something about them made me sleepy. :-[

I'm sure running the board for the Pats is similar to the Red Sox (before automation), Auto racing, Imus, and FB & HW.. From experience, running the board for Imus could be tough sometimes, since he never followed his own clocks. Maybe things are different on 77WABC this time around, though I havn't listened enough to tell that yet..
