Alternative Rock should have some "rock" in it. This new stuff belongs on a Hot AC station.

The original AOR stations played the Grateful Dead, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, Chicago, Genesis... An incredible diversity of sounds and artists.
Somewhere along the line consultants decided rock stations needed to get narrower and narrower and there is no tolerance of anything that sounds different. Frankly I find it pretty boring.
"New rock" stations have trouble getting ratings. So the trend seems to be towards more diversity again. Only time will tell if it works.

If you will notice where alternative rock is concerned, folk music has played a role in influencing alternative musical styles; hence the reasoning behind the lite sounds you claim belong on an adult contemporary station.
As for what make the musical acts you mentioned as not being alternative rock, targeting women is an alternative to traditional alternative rock formats. So, by the very definition of the term "alternative", what you say is not alternative, is in fact alternative. For a definition, go back to the line immediately above line "a"
Lastly, unless you are a 25 - 54 female, the programmers who program alternative for women are not targeting you in the first place. Hence, the adult contemporary leaning alternative music does, in fact, belong on the alternative rock station for reasons I just explained in explicit detail found above. Go back to line "a" for a re-read if necessary for clarification.

WHHZ "The Buzz" presents itself as Pure Rock which by definition is mainstream rock leaning. WHHZ originally had an alternative rock focus, but over the years adjusted its format to compensate for the loss of Rock 104 in an attempt to attract the former Rock 104's displaced listeners and advertisers.

Billy Bragg, Nine Inch Nails, Tori Amos & Bob Marley on the same station.
The format has always embraced a wide variety of left of center music. Some of it later became fairly mainstream. U2, REM, New Order, Depeche Mode, etc.
Modern rock was never a purely guitar rock based format until the grunge era.

Those who want a specific format that they don't feel is represented might consider applying for an LPFM in the October window. With a little luck and about $10,000 in cash you could be on the air with your own station. If the format is popular enough, you'll be able to sell underwriting to keep the bills paid. Otherwise, you'll end up turning it off and handing over the license after a while. Either way, you'll have the answer to if Gainesville will support your particular format concept.

Hopefully it's a contest or something & not a format change. They're pretty much the only station I listen to besides X1029, which is harder to pick up since I live 80 miles from them. The Buzz has recently tweaked their playlist to include more alternative music again. I like it.
