Why can't they just leave it alone?!?

Okay, I am about to get on my soapbox with a rant. Sure, this has probaly been discussed before. But, I am sick and tired of the lack of music on the MUSIC channels. Sure, MTV disconnected the "Music Television" aspect of their logo. But, why mess with MTV Hits? As I speak, they are showing reruns of America's Best Dance Crew. Same goes for VH1 Classic. Although this is an old subject, I am tired of seeing movies and shows unrelated to music on there! Viacom as a whole doesn't support music the way they should. At least give people a reason to get into GOOD music. Of course, the saying is "Go to YouTube". That's fine, and I do that as well. But, the same can be said for almost ANY show on television now. (Imdb.com, Hulu.com, etc.) Music has a connection with a mass appeal audience. Why not go deep into the genre. Make people want to go to concerts. Break out new artists! Back to MTV Hits, sure they are a gimmicky channel that shows no variety. But, its the closest thing to MTV right now. There is no support for alternative/hard rock acts anymore. The only saving grace of MTV these days is MTV U. I am lucky enough to have U Verse and love that channel. Why can't Viacom move MTV/VH1/CMT reality and lifestyle shows to a network all it's own? TV Land is already shot to hell, so why not make TV Land the offical reality/lifestyle channel? For a deeper variety and classic shows, create TV Land 2. I realize I am probaly speaking what has been said a million times and not making much sense. But, it's the best way I can vent about this right now. Criticism and compliments are welcome either way. Take care fellow R-I friends.

I think TV Bland just doesn't feel the target demo is worthy of service anymore, however, there are many people seeking family friendly alternatives to the dreck that's on the tube already. Many would love the older shows that made the former TV Land lineup. If I want to watch new stuff there are many more channels than TV Bland and how many Extreme Makeover episodes can one tolerate anyways? I finally ditched pay-tv last week and I don't miss it. And, FWIW, while not perfect like the TV land of old, Retro TV has some decent shows that helps fill the void.

As far as music channels abandoning music, this always had be thinking. When they started to play movies I knew it was only a matter of time before they would change their focus. Sadly, I don't miss them at all, either.

1985 just called; they want their Huey Lewis music videos back.

MTV shows videos in the morning before 8am I noticed one early morning. Also VH-1 and CMT both show music during the day till around 11 or so I believe.

We went over this - one of the reasons MTV, VH1 et al shy away from playing music videos at peak hours like afternoons and evenings is because of the royalties involved. That's why traditional music videos have been shelved to late night and early mornings.

The record labels are so desperate for money, they are willing to cut off their nose despite their face. Kinda interesting to see the music industry evolving....and leaving the record companies behind.

We live in a world now where people can just watch any music video on demand on Youtube. Why wait to see your favorite video?

This is interesting, I'd never thought of this before. We do live in a society where we can't wait for anything anymore. Good point.

For some, it may be a form of impatience to be sure. But there's a simple practical issue--in a world where I can get what I want by way of music, for instance, why would I waste time on the off chance I might find the song (video) I want in the block of time I have available? I can fill the same time with something more to my liking.

Very valid points by everyone. I loved the element of surprise back in the heyday of MTV and VH1, not knowing what they were gonna play next. As for the main channels, I realize they are not about music. My concern was for the SUB channels. (MTV Hits, Jams, VH1 Classic)
