Why can't wlrs act like the alternative station they are classified as?

They really are nothing more than a nu metal station with some modern rock throw n for good measure.I mean they have no business playing mudvayne and shinedown and disturbed they all belong on active rock.I wonder what happenend to them.When they went back on the air at 105.1 6 years ago they were a true alt station playing bloodhound gang no doubt moby house of pain etc...I wonder if radio one decided they should go after the fox.I think honestly what radio one shoudl do with the station is sell off one of the frequencies and flip the other to the all black talk network radio one started.I bet that would increase there revenue.Just someone please stick a fork in the walrus once and for all and let it be remembered for the greatness it once was!!!Opinons pleaseThanks

Hmm, sounds like a disgruntled ex employee to me. This guy goes on every message board known to slam WLRS. Anyone with half a brain would know that 75% of Alt stations in the country are playing the nu metal stuff. As for "going after" the Fox, take a look at Mediabase and do a little comparison. Not really that close at all. The fact is, there are many cross over bands ie, Staind, 3 Doors Down, Linkin Park, Nickleback, etc, that are played at Alt, Active, CHR, Hot AC, AAA, you get the idea. Ironically enough, if WLRS played bands like No Doubt he would be slamming the station for playing "too much pop". How about bands like Death Cab For Cutie, Arctic Monkeys, She Wants Revenge, Hard Fi and many, many others? Aren't those alternative bands? Sounds like Mr Patrick needs to get some education before he keeps spouting off about things he is not clear about.PS - Shinedown is Top 10 at Alternative right now, Disturbed is in the Top 20 too.

Actually eat2thebeat i have never worked for radio one but i just have a passion for the format and love the music not the active stuff but the poppier side of it and why is it that stations like kroq in los angeles and cd 101 in columbus ohio are much more alt than wlrs?Just wondering?I knwo we have had this discussion on this board somewhere i just think the format the alt format has gotten way off track the past several years.I know disturbed and shinedown are in the alt top 50 but they don't belong there in my opinion just 1 mans opinion.

Actually, the majority of alternative radio stations DON'T play nu-metal anymore.

I agree with staxofwax.Does anyone know if radio one lets there program directors have much flexibility or are very strict and say you do it this way?Maybe if its the first thing i said that could be why wlrs sounds so awful!!!

alternative station?

isn't a lot of the problem today identifying exactly what "alternative" music is? Seems like the criteria for rock and alternative and active rock is pretty fuzzy these days.

Can someone tell me why The Fox would play Matisyahu and Weezer? Now THAT'S a station that has no identity at all. WLRS might not take many risks but everything they play is chart based in the alternative format. Mr Patrick sites Indie 103 in Los Angeles - what do Louisville and L.A. have in common? Nothing. Some bands work on the East and West coasts but don't translate in the midwest. Just do some comparisons on Mediabase. It's about knowing your audience.

I also sighted cd 101 in columbus ohio alot closer than los angeles and not to far away.Ar a true alt station yes the lines are very fuzzy at least in this town between alt and active and rock formats but it hasn't always been that way like i said when lrs went back on the air in march of 2000 good station a true commercial alt station well programmed but fast forward 6 years i don't know what happenend to them.I will reiterate i really enjoyed them when they came back on the air in 2000 one of things they said no redneck crap well they couldn't say that today.

I agree. This person is posting too much about WLRS. HEY PATRICK! Come to the Wisconsin board - the activity there is dead and boring! I certainly can't see how someone can go on about a station that doesn't stream, thus not everyone can have an opinion. There's more listeners than what's in the normal listening area you know.
