Drake was losing it anyway. The glory years of KFRC and KHJ were the post-Drake years. Charlie Van Dyke was running KHJ and KFRC was run by several, including Michael Spears. At the time Spears was PD at KFRC (1973 to 1977) they saw their biggest ratings in the best demos. By then KFRC still had some Drake formatics, but what made them special was that they were (1) live, (2) local, (3) intensely involved in the local community, (4) relevant, and (5) putting some local hits into the mix.

By the time KFRC was big it didn't sound at all like a Drake station (certainly not like KHJ) except for the jingles. And, remember that they weren't even using the Drake jingles much anymore.

It's more accurate to say that KFRC first became big during the Drake years...in the years before that, it was a second-rate also ran MOR station that was seriously out-rated and out-classed by KSFO and KNBR. The same was true in LA, where the pre-Drake KHJ was out performed by KSFO sister station KMPC.

But certainly, KFRC really shined in the post-Drake years of the 70s, and even into the early 80s, becoming even more successful.

CBS (a/k/a See B.S.) ought to morph Movin 99-7 into a CHR/Pop format akin to Hot 95-7 in Houston.

I would take [email protected] in an Adult Alternative direction.

Live 105 ought to re-brand and adopt a pure Active Rock format. There's been a void ever since KSJO was ruined by Clear Channel. (In my eyes, KSJO died when the station lost Lamont & Tonelli, not when it abandoned rock. Its last couple years on the air were dreadful.) Then again, CBS has a pathetic track record when it comes to successfully executing just about any form of rock station these days.

KFRC should've been relaunched on 99.7; putting it on 106.9 was a mistake. I think there's still a chance for this station to be salvaged. For starters, the playlist needs to become more focused.

Wild card format: All Sports. Just like some news/talk stations are migrating to FM, I guarantee we will see more & more sports stations migrate to FM over the coming years. If CBS could land a couple major broadcast contracts (the Oakland A's aren't enough), an All Sports format on FM might be able to give KNBR a run for its money.

First, if CBS tries a traditional CHR in the Bay Area, within the third book I can guarantee their playlist will resemble a KYLD approach (rhythmic)....Listening to KYLD for many hours in the last couple of days, I can tell you that the PD there needs to start adding some older songs to soften up the spins on some of their currents they are beating to death..I know it's been a rule of thumb to have about 70-75 spins a week on a hot song, but I kid you not, there are times that I have heard a specific song played twice within a two hour span, that adds up to close to 100 spins....Also after listening, I can tell you that Wild 94.9 is vulnerable to another start-up Rhythmic/CHR.IMO, with the exception of St. John, I find nothing special with their air talent......There really is no competetion against KYLD perhaps since it's other so called competeter (KMEL) is in the same cluster...Maybe a CBS up-start might put some fire under wilds a$$ to tweak their playlist so the listening public does'nt get burned out....

As for what to do with CBS's other basturd child frequencies, your guess is as good as mine..

Speaking of animal problems, looks like KKIQ & KKDV are simulcasting or pretty close to it. Maybe someone has inside information on this? The music sounds fairly balanced for being consulted from out of town.

I'll try one more time: consultants don't pick the music. They do help interpret local research conducted with station listeners or potential listeners...

This is what I've been trying to push since 1997 when I started out as a rookie caller to Sportsphone 680 on KNBR.

And here it is 11 years later, it's now time for an all sports station on the FM dial, but with a twist.

I'm actually working on a progarm that mixes music with sports equally.

To my knowledge this has never been attempted on radio, and certainly not in the Bay Area.

It's time, and I would love nothing better than to be the voice, & the spearhead of a new innovative approach to sports and music on the radio.

Let's do it!

Aaugh yes the glory years...i remember many talks with Michael Spears on the phone then one day i met him. Hit it off immidiatley. Smoked a big fat one and went in to talk more programming high as a kite!!!! I remember us talking about a screaming dj who was in atlanta telling everybody he was going to be the next programming guru and eventually GM...his name was Little Dan Mason
