Why couldn't WZFX use the WECT tower?

I forget where the topic is, but it seems a shame to just tear down the WECT tower.

And how tall was it really? Most sources say 2000 feet but the newspaper article, still claiming it set some record, said 1905.

The thread you're looking for is on the North Carolina board, with a detailed discussion on the structure's height (I'm still not sure where the Fayetteville Observer article got that 1,905 figure, as many reputable, precise sources such as the FCC and aviation maps listed the height as exactly 2,000 feet, and the analog VHF antenna atop the tower appeared to be in place at the time of implosion).

I recently wondered why the site wasn't used by some Fayetteville-market radio operator(s), but it likely had something to do with the site's age (43 years), location (still a good ways from Fayetteville proper, site restrictions/short-spacing) , structure (not able to accomodate weight of additional antennae), owners not interested in leasing vertical real estate, or some combination of the above. Without researching short-spacing, etc., Fayetteville-licensed WQSM 98.1 or even Fayetteville State's WFSS 91.9 may have benefitted from that site.

Does anyone familiar with the site know if WECT leased space on the tower to other users? I'm not aware of any FM broadcasters having used the site over its 43-year run.

Pick a number :)

- Overall height of the tower, including analog ch. 6 antenna, above ground, was 609m. (1,998')
- The height of the radiation center of the analog antenna above average terrain was 588m. (1,830')
- The height of the radiation center of the analog antenna above ground was 595m. (1,952')
- The height of the radiation center of the analog antenna above sea level was 612m. (2,007')

I think the 1,905' figure (should be 1,906) would have been for the height of the tower itself; the antenna would have added another 92 feet. The 1,830' figure appears in FCC records, as that's the number that best determined the potential for WECT's analog signal to interfere with other stations.

There were no other broadcast stations authorized to use that tower at any time since the database was established in the early 1980s.

The Star-News is trying to claim the 1905-foot tower set a record, but where is the official word on how tall the structure was for the purpose of inclusion in a list of tallest structures?

Wilmington (Oak Island) has a radio station at 98.3, and Myrtle Beach has one at 92.1.
