Why did LA get the prime KMVN call letters

Wasn't Seattle's Movin 92.5 the first "movin" format station? Why did they have to settle for KQMV and LA got the KMVN?

Some of the people who post here with their sarcastic comments need to get a life. I'm not in the radio business, but I'm interested in radio, so I check this board every so often. I asked a legitimate question and I get a sarcastic response from pbf1. Maybe pbf1 should get his/her digital camera out , drive around town and find some radio banners to take pictures of so he/she can post them on this site and make himself/herself useful to this board.

?

Nobody but radio geeks (I am one) and the FCC care about call letters. KOSO in Modesto is "B-93," and has been for years now, without a single "B" in their call letters.

Not sure how many people would have even thought to ask why Sandusky chose KQMV for Movin', and not KMVN, which (I agree with you) would have made more sense.

But the bottom line is that the AVERAGE listener (i.e., who would never radio a board like this for any reason) can even NAME the call letters. (And if they did, they might say KLSY.)

Sorry, I don't have the time or inclination to take pictures of banners. I'm a group OM sitting through a conference call bored out of my mind - the only reason I'm here now.

Airwaiver, I mean Dialtwisty, Tom, or whatever handle he's using right now better get out the ol' instamatic camera and get ready for a whole new series of roll-o-banners from 92.5!!

BTW Airwaver, I've got a hot tip for you...there are two KUBE roll-o-banners on utility poles attached...oh this is so cutting edge....vertically down at the Fairview and Mercer exit!! You'd better get your camera out and add them to your collection. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
:D

Well, as an outsider to radio, call letters seem to be a pretty important part of radio, and TV, at least in this town. While this topic was started about "Movin 92.5" which has no call letter branding, a significant number of FM stations in this market only use call letters to market their station: KUBE, KMPS, KJR, KBSG, KISW & KZOK. On TV, KOMO, KING, KONG and KIRO marketing is all about call letters. These examples are what prompted this topic for me.

By the way, all these sarcastic postings really devalue this website. So, losers need not reply to this topic.

Call Letters

Other than maybe KBSG, the calls you've listed are pretty old.

How many listeners can name the calls of the Wolf, for example? Even Kiss, or the End? (Yeah, I know this board's readers can do it in their sleep; I'm talking about average - even the average active - listener.)

Most sets of call letters of importance have heritage to them, or like KUBE, make words all by themselves. It's rare that call letters become known rather than their original intent; KBSG was originally "K-Best."

As for people replying to this topic...people are likely to make their own decision to post. Your "losers need not reply to this topic" close doesn't exactly enhance your posts' values.

KMVN had been taken by another station prior to KLSY flipping to 92.5. The calls became available later. KQMV still gets the point across. My guess is it was probably more important for Sandusky to get rid of the KLSY call letters which meant AC and get MOVIN and new calls in place to let listeners know of the change.

I agree that most listeners don't link calls to stations anymore. WOLF, MOVIN, JACK, STAR, MOUNTAIN, WARM, THE TRUTH could all have any call letters they want. Arbitron diary holders put down frequency first anyway.

Boys, Boys...and ladies too...Calm down. It's an Arbitron fact that over 95% of diaries returned use the station call letters as the only source of station identification.

In years of looking at diary returns and now with PD Advantage its clear that calls and frequency are all that matter for diary purposes. And it is all about the almighty diary, right?

That's why Arb stopped asking stations for slogans. For purposes of listener re-call no one cares about "Seattle's Continous Soft Favorites" or "Country with a K"...So who cares about call letters...Arbitron, the stations and their listeners, that's who!

Besides, this board is about radio and call letters, their history and changes are a cool part of radio.

Why did LA get the cool calls, cause they bought them. Sandusky went with what ever had not been taken at the time per the FCC's free database. Money talks!

Well said.

Marc Kaye isn't about to buy call letters when he hasn't even forked out the dough for a morning show.

Why did LA get the prime KMVN call letters?

LA is more important.

There you have it, folks. And there's the reason Seattleites hate Californians.

Happy to oblige. Enjoy second city status. Oh wait, you're not that good.

BS ALERT!

If the station actually USES them, maybe. But put down the pipe if you believe 95% of Z100 New York listeners put down WHTZ, and not Z100.
