Why Didn’t WXEN And WABQ Swap Formats?

I’ve always wondered why WXEN (106.5) and WABQ (1540) didn’t swap formats back in the day. Their owner, Booth did that swap in Detroit with WJLB AM and FM which had the same formats. Anyone have any thoughts as to why it didn’t happen here? Would have made quite an impact to Cleveland radio.

I think that, at the time, WXEN was the more profitable station compared with the daytime AM. WJLB, on the other hand, was a fulltime station but in a market without as large and diverse a Euro-ethnic population as Cleveland. Up to the late 60's, Cleveland supported two multi-national stations, WZEN and WZAP. WXEN had been created by Xenophon Zapis, who went on to own WZAP.

Ironically, it was WZAK (93.1) that went urban in 1981 under Xen Zapis, who had bought out his business partners. 106.5 never got the format.

Thanks David.

My dad used to listen to Tony Petkovsek on WXEN. When WXEN dropped nationalities, Tony moved to WZAK. But he only lasted a short time there before they switched to urban. Tony then ended up on WELW 1330.
