Why do new TV shows have trailers anymore?

It seems since about 2009, TV shows started having trailers like movies do. Why is that? Why is it that they have trailers now, when they didn't before? Is it because the shows can't sell themselves anymore? What are your thoughts?

Hype up their show. But I noticed TV show trailers pop up during NBA Playoff games and its either a Netflix Show and Hulu shows that put their trailers during halftime for the NBA. A lot of this is really Hulu and Netflix hyping their shows for their apps and a ploy to justify subscriptions to their venues.
