WHY DO RADIO ONE FAVOR URBAN AC RADIO OVER HIP HOP RADIO?

Radio One Broadcasting favors Urban Adult Contemporary radio over Urban Contemporary or Mainstream Urban Radio, because Radio One always make crucial changes to make sure that their Urban AC stations have the best signal in their radio markets.

Remember here in DETROIT back in 2005 when Radio One moved the hip hop radio station at 105.9 to the weak signal at 102.7? Then Radio One moved the Urban AC to the good strong signal at 105.9 so that their Urban AC station in DETROIT would have the best signal.

Radio One did the same thing in Philadelphia back in 2011 when they moved the Urban AC radio station 107.9 WRNB to the very strong signal at 100.3 FM in PHILADELPHIA, PA. Then Radio One moved the hip hop station to the weak signal at 107.9 and named it HOT 107.9.

Why do Radio One favor Urban AC radio? Is it because Radio One Chairperson Cathy Hughes is elderly?

Or it could be in most of their market the urban AC gets better ratings than the HIP HOP stations.

I believe that the Urban AC stations get stronger ratings the HIP HOP stations because there are more older people than young people especially the baby boomers. A lot of baby boomers listen to Urban AC and cannot tolerate hip hop music like people from my generation who were born in the late 1980's.

Or it could be something as simple as the fact that hip hop is a harder sell than urban AC.

Or because Urban AC attracts the money demos better than straight-up hip hop, which skews younger audiences.

If You compare Rap Music (Hip Hop Being the Culture) between 1985 & 2000, vs the Rap Artist from 2005-till today, it's totally failed as a Genere. LL, Cool J, Bestie Boys, Sir Mix A-Lot, Dougie Fresh, Special ED, Run DMC, Scareface, Snoop Dog, Kool Moe Dee, could actually Rap in their Songs and send a message with real Instruments being mixed into the songs...

Rap Music today or as i like to Call Rap N BullS***T doesn't really tell you anything except being in a club or having sex with a woman, Listen to Lil wayne or Drake, or Rack City Chick, listnen to any Mainstream Urban station and in about 20 minutes you'll be ready to turn it off, most of it is NOISE being mixed in with Lryics that are mostly repteat words that don't actually Rap about anything ??? ::)

It's a sign of how the Culture of Hip Hop have decreased and the Genere of Rap Music has declined, on of the reasons being the Good Producers you had back in the 80s 90s..are not in the game anymore, also shows like MTV Raps are not around anymore either.

Radio One should do the same in Dallas and flip Urban Oldies over to 97.9 KBFB and move that Rap n Crap over to 94.5

There were two situations where Radio One kept the urban format OVERALL but modified it from mainstream to adult. 1) Charlotte's WCHH became WQNC in 2004, although I don't know if Davis Broadcasting picked up that station by now. 2) Same thing with WFUN St. Louis in 2004. In each case they were both standalones before being accompanied by a gospel station (Charlotte) and a hip hop station (St. Louis). Note I did not mention KKBT/KRBV in LA or WBOT/WILD-FM in Boston.

There are other exceptions to the rule of where R1 desires stronger signals for their ACs over their mainstreams; it can be the other way around. In the case of DC and Baltimore, the mainstream has a stronger signal over the AC but R1 left the formats and frequencies as they were due to the heritage of the intellectual properties. In the case of Atlanta, Columbus and Richmond, the hip hop station has been left intact while the urban AC format has switched frequencies (and added simulcasts). Dallas and Columbus have successful hip hop stations even though their urban ACs have not performed well there.

You have to consider that Detroit has one of the largest black populations of any city in America. You do have a point, though. In the current generation, hip hop is the most popular genre of music. In ten years, that may not be the case, so enjoy it while you can.

Actually here in Columbus when Urban AC WXMG was at 98.9 they were getting beter rating than Hip Hop WCKX at 107.5. Why they moved WXMG to 106.3 remains a mystery to me.

Because (hopefully) hip-hop is finally starting to die. Well, at least more of it is getting incorporated into CHR. The worst thing that happened to urban/R&B music is hip-hop. Totally ruined the genre.
