Why does 106.7 play so much Disco?

It seems like every time I tune in WLTW, they're playing a Disco song... and I'm not even counting their new Saturday Night Disco show or whatever they're calling it. Do they really feel the need to compete with WNEW so much, when WNEW is the lowest-rated FM station in NYC? Aside from WNEW itself, WLTW is by far the most "Rhythmic"-sounding AC station in the area -- all of the suburban AC's (WMGQ, WHUD, WLEV, WEBE, WOBM-FM, WKJY, etc...) have a more balanced playlist.

I agree. I don't know why they feel the need to compete with Mix. If Lite FM keeps messing with the playlist, it might cost them.<P ID="signature">______________

WLTW is New York's number 1 station and is so because they play the right balance for a New York audience.
If New York needed a LITE music station more like those of the suburbs WLTW would alter it's play list.
WLTW is not trying to compete with MIX. They're giving listeners what they want thus the reason they're number 1.
There is not much room for critism for the number 1 market's consitantly number 1 radio station..just because it's not your preference....and for the record, I happen to dislike the station too. AC is not my thing.
Doesn't mean it's not a great station for those who do like it and obviously many people do.

You can say that, but in reality, WLTW has not had a direct competitor since the demise of "Mix 105" in the mid-'90s. Therefore they don't feel the need to stick to a more conventional AC sound, because even if they play lots of Disco and hard-edged Rock songs, people will still listen to them because they have no other choice.

But if Infinity was smart, instead of wasting CBS-FM on this lunatic "Jack" format, they would've transformed CBS-FM into a mainstream AC station, perhaps even keeping the legacy "CBS-FM" name. After all, they're targeting WNEW directly at WKTU, and now K-Rock's playlist is getting a little closer to Q-104's, so why not target their other FM station at WLTW? If CBS-FM had gone AC, they could even keep many of the Oldies jocks; for example, Holly Levis would sound right at home on an AC station, with her smooth, pleasant voice.

Nevertheless, I expect Infinity to shift "Jack" in a few different directions until they find one that "clicks", just as they've done with WNEW (which was actually quite close to a "Jack"-type playlist back in their early days as "Blink").

It would have been interesting if CBS FM went AC. I would like to see competition between Lite FM and another station. Holly would sound good on the station. Bobby Jay might be ok also. Oh well. Didn't happen. If I owned CBS FM, I may call it "Sunny 101.1" or "Magic 101" with AC/oldies.

"Sunny" would be a good name for an AC station in NY, but "Magic" is taken by WMGQ (which does consistently show up towards the bottom of the NYC Arbitrons), and obviously they can't use "Mix" either. Once in a while, WNSW still calls itself "Sunny 1430", but that's just because they never bothered to re-record that ID cart!

But why give it a name, when people will just call it "CBS-FM" anyway? For a long time, they tried to use the name "Oldies 101", but just like when "Power 95" changed to WWPR and people still called it WPLJ, CBS-FM can change itself to something else and people would still call it that.

...or remember Mojo Radio? Or the Underground Network on WDRE (before they brought back the "World Famous" LIR calls?)

I Agree - the disco is too much! Why compete? They were #1 for so long. They could begin to lose their identity. It seems that in NYC all it is is "copycat radio" no uniqueness or variety. It's a shame. I'm glad there are alternative like Satellite and Internet.
