Why Does Adult Hits KBPA Get Such Great Ratings?

By far, Austin's #1 radio station is 103.5 Bob-FM. It has more than double the listeners the next music station in Austin. During the pandemic, 90.5 KUT-FM, with its NPR format of news and information, briefly surpassed KBPA. But in the most recent ratings, Bob is in double digits and KUT-FM is a strong #2. The next music station, AC KKMJ is in the fives. Many successful stations in Austin are in the fours and threes. I can't think of too many stations in a market the size of Austin (#32) like KBPA that are so far above all the competition.

KBPA is not like the Jack stations and some of their imitators, which have no DJs and use a sarcastic, wise-cracking, prerecorded voice to make remarks between songs. KBPA has live DJs. It might be better described as a Classic Hits station that plays mostly 80s, 90s and early 2000s hits. But as you can see from the list below, Bob also plays an occasional song from the 70s and a few songs that a classic hits station wouldn't play, like Garth Brooks and Portugal The Man. I'm pretty sure most Classic Hits stations are not playing Mr. Roboto or The Backstreet Boys, either. In that sense, it is more like Jack.

Austin has no Classic Hits station. I guess Bob is covering both formats. In nearby San Antonio, Classic Hits KONO-FM is #1 and the Jack FM station KJXK is #11.

Here's what Bob-FM played this afternoon between 1:30 and 3:30pm

Phil Collins -- Take Me Home
Great White -- Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Garth Brooks -- Friends in Low Places
John Mellencamp -- Pink Houses
Neil Diamond -- Sweet Caroline
Van Halen -- Pretty Woman
Backstreet Boys -- I Want It That Way
Mr. Mister -- Kyrie
Portugal The Man -- Feel It Still
Styx -- Mr. Roboto
Elton John -- Daniel
Hootie & The Blowfish -- Only Wanna Be with You
Prince -- I Would Die 4 U
The Police -- Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Blues Traveler -- Runaround
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers -- I Won't Back Down
Fleetwood Mac -- Go Your Own Way
Toto -- Africa
