Why does Cumulus insist on keeping those translators going?

I'll call it .... 98.9 The Walk ... Time of death ... 5:00pm 7/9/13.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The End came and went...still on the air this AM.

BTW: Q100 20 got an 0.5 in the last book...the same as class C-something The Game and 790 The Zone. I'm sure Cumulus's light bill for 97.9 is a lot less than CBS's or LFM's.

Please bring back Journey 97.9 and Rick Dees in the afternoons and classic Weekly Top 40 90s editions on the weekend. Those were the good old days.

Other than in Huntsville, "Journey" is dead to Cumulus. It just won't happen.

If there was some flashy new format, I bet they would gravitate towards it. If EDM was extremely popular in the market, they could do something like Evolution, even though that's CC's baby.

Evolution is down to a 0.8, and that's in a historically dance-leaning market, on a major FM signal - probably not a flashy new format people want to imitate

I'm torn between whether Classic Hits or Variety Hits would be the better programming play.

Would be nice if Cumulus could bring back the Greatest Hits format on 97.9, ditch "The Walk," and move Q100 top 20 to 98.9 FM.

I'd use the translators to flank the urban station in the market.

Cumulus and Clear Channel has had plenty of opportunity to tap into the Urban pie here. Steve Hegwood took that opportunity and launched STREETZ 94.5. From what I hear they are doing very well especially in sales from nightclub and black owned business ads charging way cheaper than the competition. If Cumulus was smart, they'd launch an Urban Oldies on one of those translators to compete against KISS and MAJIC since both are Urban AC and tend to play newer R&B.

So, we're talking about adding a 6th Urban station, and on a translator?

Rhythmic would cut into some of the Urban ratings, but it would be unique enough to give people a reason to listen to a translator instead of a highly rated FM station

I don't recall WILD's rhythmic format tapping into any of the Urban stations ratings here. All of the Urbans still rated higher than WILD's format. While a Rhythmic done right could work on POWER 96.1, I don't see any other company going after that format especially in the South. I think the rhythmic suburban caucasian audience listens to the Pop stations and HOT 107.9 for Hip-Hop. Example: I went to Lil Wayne's concert last Friday at Lakewood. Nice mixture of african americans and caucasian fans, but I was surprised at the amount of caucasian attendees. I didn't see any of the Pop stations out there even though Lil Wayne is an Urban/Rhythmic/Pop crossover artist. The only station there was HOT and STREETZ.

Just barely - we're only talking about a translator, here, and one that's currently sharing a 0.1

The real reason is, that when a station is sold, the more pieces of paper (licenses) that slide across the table, the better it makes it look to the purchaser that he's getting something for his money.

Thats a great idea. I'm tired of listening to my automation computer (zararadio) with nothing but oldies on it.
The reason, I think, is demographics. The audience is not there. Don't know if you know, but Atlanta is becoming a large Hispanic and Black market.

The age demographics reasoning really doesn't make sense. There are tons of 40+ year olds in Atlanta that fall under the Classic Hits genre.

I don't think the straight number of 40+ or 50+ residents matters, it's the percent of the total population (and for 60s and 70s tracks, we're really talking 50+, not 40+) - if 60% of the population of a metro is, say 50+, more advertisers choose that demo as a target - but if only 30% of the metro is 50+, advertisers choose younger demos

In other words, McDonalds could choose any number of target demos to focus on, since people of all ages eat there - but in a market with a high % of 50+ residents, they profit greatly from advertising on Classic Hits - in a market with a low % of 50+ residents, they profit more from advertising on CHR, Alternative, Hot AC, etc.
