Why does Greenville not have a second Urban station?

This has been brought up in numerous threads but I think it deserves one of its own. Why on earth does Greenville just have one Urban type station? Can it not be supported, or will nobody make the jump? Seems any market that has an Urban AC station getting 10-12 shares can support some competition. We don't need another Urban AC, but I think a Hip-Hop/Urban station would work (like the new 92.5 in Charleston maybe). 98.1 doesn't count. I just can't believe Jamz has gone this long with the massive shares and nobody has tried to go up against them.

I guess the problem is an extremely stagnant market and none of the signals (except 96.7) seem to have numbers that would warrant a format flip. 92.5 has slipped lately, but still does decently. Could Entercom gain more with an Urban format on 93.3 than active rock? And why not 96.7? Clear Channel needs to be shown the "off" button with that one in its current state.

Just speculation, but it's really a large hole that could be filled with success, in my opinion. BTW, as a side note, we have two AC stations both doing flashback "high school reunion" weekends. Oh, the creativity...

Greenville is missing an Urban Hip-Hop and an Urban AC station. 107.3 JAMZ is trying to cover both crowds, however it's working since no competion is in town. If a real Hip-Hop station were to sign on, I can see JAMZ going strictly Urban AC R&B/Soul. Suprised Clear Channel hasn't flipped to Urban with Steve Harvey, but lately they're flipping the switches to Rhythmic AC stations.

I don't know if Clear Channel would do R/AC because that would overlap a lot with WMYI. I think Urban on 96.7 would work with Steve Harvey. Put a booster in east Spartanburg (like 98.1 did with 94.1) and let 'er rip. However, I don't know if Clear Channel would be willing to put that much effort in to that station, or would it even take much since there isn't much competition? Shine was easy before they went satellite because they just voicetracked the 102.5 airstaff.

That move might help Clear Channel, because they could possibly take JAMZ out of 1st place and that could make WSSL, one of their own, #1. However, Shine 96.7 is the station that refuses to die if I've ever seen one....amazing it's still on the air.

Ahh, the beauty of oldies...they don't have to be segregated into "dance" oldies, "smooth" oldies, "easy listening" oldies. They are the genre.

Country western "dance", country western "smooth", etc.

Just kind of strikes me odd that there is a need for a "hip hop dance" urban station, "easy listening" urban, etc.

It's funny to see debate over whether a second urban would work in Greenville when we have FIVE in Columbia (DM, Beat, Hot, Kiss & Gospel 95.3).

5 stations and 3 different Urban formats. Greenville has only 1.

If Greenville only has one Urban station how many other stations from surounding areas reach the Greenville area that have Urban formats.

The only Urban formatted stations that I can think of that reach Greenville are out of Charlotte Power98 and V101.9 thats about it.

Power 98 (WPEG) can be received somewhat in Spartanburg, but WHZT (Hot 98.1) kills it anywhere west of that. V101.9, however, makes it in to Greenville and has a listenable signal. They usually show up in the book.

I just don't understand why no one else wants to try Urban (maybe like WPEG) in Greenville? The market has 2 country stations, 2 AC stations, countless religious stations, but just one Urban station? This just doesn't make any sense. If Columbia and Charleston can support 5, Greenville can definitely support 2.

Yea when I lived there i always wondered the same thing because if I'm not mistaking Greenville/Spartanburg is the largest market in the state and I agree that if Charleston & Columbia can support 5 Urbans then Greenville could at least hold 2. I think its only a matter of time because 107.3 JAMZ don't know what they want to do and Hot98.1 sounds just like 95SX here in Charleston. But the Greenville market is hurting for a Urban/Hip-Hop Station.

Yeah, Greenville-Spartanburg is #59 (Charleston is #83 and Columbia is #89). The African-American population in the market is a lot smaller, but still, it could be supported.

The only candidate at the moment is 96.7. That station has sat long enough and why Clear Channel lets it linger is a mystery to me. Nobody is listening and they sound terrible. They could take it Urban like WPRW in Augusta or WXBT in Columbia.

107.3 Jamz in the spring book - 9.8 share, up
Shine 96.7 - 0.5, down

Come on Clear Channel...try to give them a run for their money!! Straight Urban would do well on that frequency, look how V101.9 and Power 98 show and they are Charlotte stations. 96.7 is being beat by everyone and is absolute last 12+. I bet it could get a 3 and a half on that frequency.

96.7 COVERS GREENVILLE PRETTY GOOD, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE UPSATE?
By the looks of the ratings, nobody is doing badly enough to probably consider changing formats except 96.7, especially the way radio is here. The audience wanting more Urban choices are listening to Power and V, I don't think the signal issues 96.7 has in parts of the market are as bad as those have in a lot of areas. I still think they could pull some numbers with it. Better than just Jamz.

Trust me, I'd love to see one of the class C's do it, but it just doesn't look like it'll happen now. Heck, I think Dim...er Shine will be gone in 10 years at this rate.
