Why does KACC sound more 'alive' than others?

I just discovered KACC and immediately noticed how different they sound compared to the big boys. I don't know how describe it really--- KRBE and 95.7 sound like its all smashed together, and I can't listen to them for more than 10 mins...my ears get tired. After finding KACC I left it on all day and loved it.

My stereo sounds like a stereo again, not the shrill, clipped mess I've been putting up with. The music feels alive and breathing. Am I weird or is there a reason for this? I've heard the same songs on the other classic rock stations and those guys sound thin and lifeless...

I'd love to know the reason/secret behind this :)

Yeah KACC is one of the best rock stations ive heard. They know how to mix modern rock along with the classics always keeping it fresh. Ive been listening to them for years and would never consider stopping by the garbage at 93.7 or 107.5

They sound so much better simply because they use much less processing than the others.

In recent years, the object of both recorded music & broadcast is to see if they can be the loudest on the dial or player. The suits forget that for music to be music, there must be loud with the soft.

Yep, the lack of compressed processing, ironically, makes it more lively than the stations who kill the dynamics and excitement of rock music.

Well, one of the reasons is the music KACC plays for the most part was recorded back before the labels started shipping it to stations already clipped and run through a hard limiter, and I'd suspect a lot of the newer rock product they play hasn't been mastered by the same people that smash the crap out of pop music.

You would probably be hard pressed to find a song in the libraries of 95.7 or 104.1 that wasn't shipped to them pre-smashed by the labels these days.

You guys are too kind......We rarely get noticed for our processing. The processing is just our Optimod 8500 with everything adjusted at reasonable levels. We compress a little, but enough to control peaks and not squash everything. We're not in competition for being the loudest station on the dial, but hopefully we kept a little of the dynamic range and the integrity of the music.......except when we play Nickelback. ;D

Thanks for the nice words.....

They probably sound more alive because their playlist is not so dead!! Good god these classic rock or classic "hits" stations just play the same old crap over and over and over... It's really unlistenable. At least KACC will play stuff by those same artists that the other stations won't play for whatever reason, making it sound fresh. And that's a big difference!
