Why does KIIS-FM have to play bad hip hop songs?

I decided to listen to KIIS-fm today at work. I was enjoying the typical rhythmic hits the station is known for: Chris Brown, Rhianna, Kanye West, Pussycat Dolls, Jordan Sparks, Jonas Bros. etc. when a song entitled "Whatever You Like" by T.I. was played. After listening for a minute I thought, "This song is awful. Why are they playing it?" I realize I am a middle aged male out of the KIIS demo. However at the time I was working with two hispanic women in their twenties, prime station demo target. Without any prompting from me the first one said, "This song sucks." Then the second one asked me to change the station. I checked to see if maybe the song is huge on Power and no, it's not even top 10. So, my question is, is KIIS-FM risking their #1 PPM status by playing these kinds of songs that lack mass appeal and belong on pure rhythmic/urban stations?

And that is why stations are so cautious about adding new songs. There is a big chance that the unfamiliar song you heard will be top 10 in a few weeks. All new songs are unfamilar at some point.

Anyway, your whole story is about as believable as an episode of Smallville.

FYI, "Whatever You Like" by TI is the number one song in the country. For a couple of weeks now its been sitting at the top of Billboard's Hot 100. Ask those "2 young hispanic women" again in a couple of weeks what they make of that song.

KIIS' callout kind of proves the stereotype of Hispanics liking rhythmic product, and the LA market is 40% Hispanic... ::)

I'm (almost, if you count 30-somethings) a middle aged white man in the radio industry that's out of the CHR demo, and like my daughter, I dig the joint!  Heard it yesterday afternoon on the radio (a CHR station) coming home from work.  David's probably right about it being a smash.

Song is #1 Urban, Top 5 Rhythmic, and one of the fastest growing songs on the Top 40 chart... KIIS is smart to play it ... Probably why they are #1 across the board in PPM.
