Why does KTOK hate Edmond?

I was utterly amazed. This morning as a tornado was on the ground going through Edmond, no one at KTOK bothered to dump coast to coast for live coverage. However, KJYO & KHBZ managed to flip the switch.

That is well beyond inexcuseable

That's cute. You're assuming that they even had a warm body in the room.

Aren't you just adorable....

Yes you are....

Is it any wonder there is a PFRM from the FCC to FORCE all of us broadcasters to have someone at the studio at all times? I don't agree with legislating a fix, however, times like this when a station SHOULD be paying attention adds a ton of fuel to the fire. Someone should have been paying more attention...

If I left my life in the hands of OKC radio to save me during a storm I think I would be dead in a few short hours. I will admit KMGL and the renda guys were on top of it.

" I will admit KMGL and the renda guys were on top of it." Now that's something refeshingly different. I know in the past they've been pretty much asleep at the wheel most of the time. I hope they continue the improvement.

Some years ago, there was a story in Radio and Records about a jock in Texas who was reemed out by his PD. Why? Because he read weather bulletins about tornados being sighted in his area. The PD was upset because the jock had interrupted the music flow to inform his listeners about a life threatening situation. With pinheads like that PD,is it any wonder why radio is in the shape its in today?

Is it any wonder they want to put us all back to the 70s where we have to have someone on duty 24/7 at stations? I personally think there's better ways to handle it (central point EAS contact available 24/7 and a GOOD backbone via a statewide system to distribute the alerts to each station), but I can definately see how public advocacy groups could take something like what this stupid-assed PD down there did and make a broad assumption that the rest of us are not paying attention to warning the public. Greed and cheapness is what got us in the bind. The sad thing is if the rules change it's likely going to be the LITTLE small-town and non-comm guys that will be hurt the most. Irronically many small market stations do much more to help the public in their area than the big guys ever thought about...

What's the problem? Haven't we all come to the realization that the only people who matter are the guys who are buying and selling stock in the radio industry? They weren't being affected by the weather, so why mention it, right? Plus, someone might miss a spot if a mic was cracked when it wasn't scheduled.

The KTOK/Edmond fiasco is exactly why the FCC will one day require personnel to be on duty 24/7 to maintain radio stations. It is a public safety issue.

Tells you volumes about Cheap Ch.

They really could care less about their stations, their workers (I mean "liabilities") and their communities.

After all, all that station is supposed to do is funnel money back to San Antonio.

.... so they can get even more bloated piles of cash from the Bain Capital idiots for something that's obsolete and failing. There's a sucker born every minute, appearently in the investment biz included!

JBizzle,

Thanks for the "adorable" comment, and thanks for noticing!

I made a guess that there was not a warm body in there. They might want to rethink the KTOK slug line, "when news breaks out..." It reminds me of the jingle OG+E NEVER plays anymore, "... We'll never leave you in the dark..." Too many outages, I'll bet, caused them to reexamine the old saying about it ain't bragging if you can do it. Clearly they dropped the testicle that time!

I don't think KTOK hates Edmond. One of their salesmen (gone now and hawking cars on tv) told an Arbitron rep., when he asked where he lived, said, "I live in Edmond. All the rich, young executives live in Edmond."

Isn't that just adorable? My work here is not done.
