Why does Sam Clover gasp???

Mornings on KYW, Sam will do traffic on the 2's, say "next update in less than ten minutes", then audibly gasp before saying "I'm Sam Clover in the KYW 24-Hour Traffic Center."

Is he that much short on breath???? ??? :-\ ;D

Maybe he's in rarefied air.

There seems to be more gasping around here these days.
Other gaspers I've heard lately:
Mark Knoller
Alan Loudell

Asthma?
Lack of aerobic exercise?

I'll add two more I've noticed too, funny someone mentioned this...Bob Kelly....and CNN's Anderson Cooper especially!

Everytime I hear Sam Clover, I think of that electric 106/shadow traffic aircheck. "There's a fire upper Dublin, Bethlehem Pike is closed near Highland ave"

I am amazed sometimes at how nit-picky some of us are, trying to find fault with the people we listen to. Sam Clover is damn good. Before he started doing mornings on KYW, if you'll recall, there was a revolving door of people...John Butterworth, Tony Harris, etc. But Clover has lasted. KYW likes him, and it seems like listeners like him. Traffic is very tough to do on certain mornings, especially on a rigidly timed station like KYW. He has to get the info out there, quickly and clearly. Sometimes, when there is A LOT going on, that's not so easy. So, he may gasp here and there. So what.

So what? He's a professional announcer. He's paid to announce properly. It used to be announcers were supposed to know how to pronounce things correctly, how to enunciate and how to breathe properly. That's what he, and all the others mentioned, get paid for.

No arguement with the standards mentioned about what makes a professional announcer. But you have to remember, Sam Clover performs traffic reports so they aren't the usual dry script. A lot of people get the pictures he draws and that's why they like his style. It's very hard to do. That's also the mark of a real pro.

Since this thread is traffic oriented, who fits your standards. Might as well include news since the two are related. Past and/or present, who would you point out to up and comers as people who meet your standards?

Where's the Arco AMPM Go Patrol when you need it? :)

Don't laugh! It just may well be coming back. Not Arco, but the AM/PM mini marts are coming back east. The "BP Connect" stores are slated to convert to "AM/PM's" throught 2008. On the west coast, the AM/PM's will still be selling Arco gasoline, out this way they will be selling the BP/Amoco gas.
