Why Does San Antonio Like Old Music So Much?

If I get flammed for this, oh well. just gotta throw it out there so sorry if I offend those you who absolutely love SA radio. KISS has always played older songs (and even added older crap) Magic doesn't play any of the newest Hot AC stuff like the MIX 96.5 in Houston and lots of other cities, KZEP is classic rock obviously, 106.7 another classic rock station....am I missing any? Unless you're into country (two stations) and Top 40 (also two stations) some of us are pretty much screwed here in town. No 101X type of station or Rock station that at least leans more Modern, no modern/hot ac station where we can hear the latest Colbie Calait or Daughtry. Think I made my point.

You hit the nail on the head when you asked "Why does SAN ANTONIO like old music so much?" The stations are responding to the demands of the market. If the operators thought that Daughtry and Colbie would attract a large audience among S.A. radio listeners, they would be playing it.

I don't know, but KONO 860 is one of the bright spots of SA radio that we get here in Houston ---

You should title this thread correctly. Translation to the b/s you posted is, SA doesn't have an Alternative station so I will bitch and complain.

SA has 4 Top 40 stations. Granted, one is Spanish Pop with splash of English titles. These four stations cater to the youth of SA. And despite the amount of competition, all four seem to be holding up well.

As for Magic not airing the current Hot A/C tracks. Have you seen how much Hot AC sounds very similar to a Top 40 station? Mix 96.5.....REALLY??? See link-->http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=198938.0
Colbie Calait and Daughtry both get spins at Magic and at Q101.9. However, neither station has either artist on high rotation.

Austin doesn't have a rock station 93.7 KLBJ FM is more of a classic rock station despite the fact the bill their station as Austin's Rock Station.

101X is just alternative plus the electronic dance music show Hypersonic radio on Saturdays.
It sounds like a Top 40 Rock format.

The Modern Rock format is dying in America today. Just like the Beautiful Music stations in the mid 80s.

I agree with all of this. Why doesn't San Antonio have a "Hot AC" station? Hot ACs are in the top 5 or top 10 of every major city, and San Antonio would be no exception. Magic may morph into a Hot AC station someday, but just because they play Daughtry or Colbie Callait every now and then doesn't qualify them, especially when they play Carly Simon or Elton John circa 1976 a couple of spins later.

As far as the lack of a rock alternative or dance format is concerned, there is an easy fix to your suffering, and that would be to buy an HD Radio. You would get a "101X type station" in 104-5HD2, and a dance station in 96-1HD2.

Magic hasn't had Carly Simon nor Elton John on their playlist in several years.

Magic doesn't even touch 70s music. You must be thinking of KONO.

Au contraire, mon frere...I drove from Austin to Floresville this past Friday, and around noon on Magic 105-3, I heard Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," and on the way back around 8-ish I heard Elton John's "Benny and the Jets." It definitely was not KONO.

Freak occurrence? Maybe.

The Entry needs to be updated and expanded.

You're right, but the Radio-Locator listing is only partly wrong. They really do need to change the way they show what's being relayed by adding the HD information, so maybe we could say that it's "incomplete" until they change their criteria. Delving into it a little further, in this particular case an application for the translator earlier this year indicated that they would be airing programming from KJCE via KKMJ-HD3 (instead of the HD2 signal).

What would appear to be erroneous information from Radio-Locator on the translator's frequency and status is drawn from the FCC database. K287AY's operation on 105.3 is still shown, along with the construction permit for 96.3; an application for a license to cover the change was filed back in March but it's still shown as "accepted for filing." Once the FCC decides to catch up, the translator will be issued new call letters with the prefix "K242--," since it changed from channel 287 to channel 242.

Showing the program source by simple call letters is no help when KTXX is shown as the program source for 97.1, 106.5 and 95.1 (when it was on the air) and none of the translators actually carries the main programming of KTXX.

This playlist is incorrect. One can only pull playlists from the previous day. When you posted this, it was six days after the fact.
