Why does WBBM give IL lottery #'s but not IN?

Why does 780 am give out Illinois' lottery numbers but not Indiana's when the COL *borders* the Hoosier State? Is N-E IN that much of a backwater of Chicagoland? This easterner is curious.

I don't know the reason to that, but for those who live near Wisconsin; do you hear the Wisconsin lottery numbers on WBBM too? I haven't. As for the Hoosier Lottery, Chicago doesn't have immediate access to Hoosier Lottery numbers (as to when they're just drawn) like they do with the Illinois Lottery. Illinois Lottery numbers are drawn in Chicago while the Hoosier Lottery numbers are drawn in Indianapolis (if I'm correct on that). Chicago stations tend to ignore Indiana on more than just lottery, if you ever notice. Your best bet for Hoosier Lottery number is to look at your local paper, or check hoosierlottery.com for the numbers. Chicago stations mainly focus on Chicago and nearby suburbs for news, and for those that give out the lottery numbers, it's usually Illinois Lottery numbers. Maybe you need to contact WBBM to why they don't give Hoosier Lottery numbers in their newscasts.
Edited by dave73 on 01/20/06 04:12 PM.

Sinister response:

How much does the Hoosier Lottery spend on advertising as opposed to the Illinois Lottery?

Re: 1953?

WBBM could get the Florida lottery numbers if they so desired. I would guess that they probably have access to the internet in their newsroom. They probably only give Illinois numbers because their focus is on Chicagoland and not those icky Hoosiers or Cheeseheads.
______________

Couldn't give a dollar amount, but it is quite a lot on Indianapolis TV and radio (mostly TV right now)

WGBO used to air the Hoosier Lottery Game Show & air the lottery numbers until they were sold to Univisión. Then WJYS took it over, but I forgot when they dropped it. WYIN eventually picked up the game show, but I don't think they picked up airing the lottery numbers. Now the game show's cancelled. As for advertising, it's funny that there's an office in Gary, but doesn't do much advertising in NW Indiana. I don't know about other parts of Indiana, but I do remember with the game show, most of the contestants were from the Indianapolis area. Probably no station will mention Hoosier Lottery numbers on any Chicago area station anytime soon. I almost never hear them on any of the NW Indiana stations either.

It's a significant amount in the other sizeable tv/radio markets too (South Bend, Fort Wayne, etc).

At one time there was a state law in Indiana that forbade the broadcast of out-of-state lottery numbers results. I don't know if that law is still in place or not... does Illinois have such a state law?

Sorry, I'm not that desperate, and not just because I am not a gambler as far as moola. :) As stated in my initial post, I am an easterner. As in (lifelong)East Coast resident. This is the time of year, due in part to my hour-plus commute, that I can hear WBBM when I set out at 6:55 et every morning just as WBBM is giving the previous night's IL lottery (and also during the last few minutes of the homeward drive after the sun has set here in the Mid Atlantic).

Definitely not...I've seen Hoosier Lottery numbers on the news on channels 5, 7, and 9. If you need the numbers, watch them, or better yet get one of the papers....I think the Trib and Sun-Times both carry not only Illinois and Indiana numbers, but even Michigan and Wisconsin.

But the only Hoosier Lottery advertising I've seen in Illinois is billboards along I-80/94 in Lansing within a couple miles of the border.

Whenever I was at a friend's place in South Bend watching TV, they always gave the numbers for both Indiana & Michigan. I don't know about WSBT since I never listened to the AM in South Bend.

Here is a guess- MONEY

I would guess that the Illinois lottery pays WBBM and the Hoosier lottery (WIsconsin lotto, too) doesn't.

I believe the law is that you can print or broadcast out-of-state lottery numbers only if it's an adjoining state.

But more importantly, it seems to me that WBBM does the radio broadcasts of the Illinois lottery drawings in Chicago--and it would seem to me that the state would have in their contract something that a station that broadcasts drawings cannot broadcast other states' results--particularly when Indiana and Wisconsin are Powerball states and Illinois is a MegaMillions state.
