Why does WDEL go head to head with WILM

Maybe while Chris Carl is in the neighborhood answering the post about the Phillies and ESPN radio, he'll offer a comment here too. I've not any idea of what the ratings are for either WDEL or WILM other than the 12+ numbers, but it would seem, to me at least, that airing Al Messetti (a liberal talker ) opposite WILM's John Watson (a liberal talker) and then airing Rick Jensen ( a conservative talker on WDEL) opposite Rush/Hannity on WILM isn't the best way to win the ratings battle as I'd assume Rush/Hannity would beat out Jensen as all are conservatives.

Wouldn't WDEL benefit more by airing Jensen opposite WILM's Watson and Messitti opposite Rush/Hannity? Do folks that tune in to AL stay tuned to WDEL for Rick? I guess the same question could be asked for WILM, do folks that tune in to John Watson stay tuned for Rush and Hannity? Or do those shows pull in different listeners.

I guess what I'm saying is that the conservatives who'd like Rush/Hannity would probably also like Jensen, but hate Messetti and visversa with Messetti's loyal listeners not liking Jensen's show. Or is there something I'm not getting. Somehow I don't imagine Rush's listeners growing bored and tuning into Jensen's show and Messetti's liberal listeners staying tuned for Jensen or switching to WILM for Rush. Those liberal listeners might switch to WHYY-FM for NPR programming, but that doesn't help either WDEL or WILM.

Mike,

That's a good question. Why would we? Unless, we were winning.... Maybe you should turn the question around.

It is my understanding Chris, that in the last five books WILM won 4 out of 5. So the question was asked right. I think both WILM and WDEL should make some changes, but nothing that drastic.

Matt jon,

Depends what demographic numbers you're looking at and at what daypart. We've dominated the AM drive numbers for several books.

Let's just say we're not disappointed with where we are, especially where we've been.

Of course the Arbitron gods could change things and I'll be singing a different tune next month.

Chris, your compnay has a history of kicking PD's out the door if the books are bad. Always keep an updated resume on hand. Ask around about Nick Seneca. He was a former PD there and got he boot when Mr. Booker placed all the blame on Nick even though Nick had nothing to say about the format. He did what they told him to do.

Thanks for the advice Warmland, but I knew what I was getting into when I signed on. PD isn't a position that many people retire from -- anywhere.

That is so true. Just ask John Wilson who put in many years there...walked out and was hired back and then finally fired.
