Why does WGTY have such high ratings?

WGTY has an 11.3 in the latest book how can this mom and pop do this? Are county listeners too stupid to know what a mom and pop is or do they buy it like grain at the general store?

This is an easy one to answer. WGTY is unchallenged in the format and on the streets of York in the format. Ever since Z 107 (or Cat if you prefer) changed formats, nobody has taken them on the country format in the York market. They will continue to have the success they have because of that fact alone. It has absolutely nothing to do with who owns them.

In Lancaster, one could say the same for I 105. Big difference is they have a far superior on air product to GTY. Murph and Casey would take GTY's morning show to the wood shed every time if they were to go head to head.

Central P-A DESPERATELY needs another country station. And one could argue three Classic Hits stations...Peak, Sox, and Mix is one too many.

Um... I don't think so, Tim. Let's see... we've got WGTY, I-105 and WRBT. And you believe we need a fourth? Puh-leeze...
:D

Actually, there is a fourth: Red 102.3. And out-of-market rimshots can also be counted, Like Frederick's 99.9 and Hagerstown's 104.7, both of which boom into York and Adams counties like locals. 93.1 WPOC from Baltimore also has a following above the Mason-Dixon line. Then there are three AMs doing Classic Country: WIOO, WHVR and WWSM. Yessir, I think twangin' of just about every tune is well-represented in this here part of the country. "DESPERATELY needs another?" Please, no.

WGTY has double digits because they focus on the York-Adams metro and virtually own Adams County, Hanover and western York County. Country listeners are extremely loyal. It would take a long time for an upstart competitor to erode that significantly, if at all. Even when they had 106.7 in the market, their numbers were still pretty high.

Personally, I am glad to see a locally owned station doing so well. I will take that over corporate giant who owns so many stations, they don't even know how many, nor car about anything but the bottom line.

Back in 1984, when the group of us at WGTY switched from automated "elevator music" to Country, this was the result we knew was going to happen. Back then, Adams County & Hanover alone were starving for a Country station, due to Z107's poor signal into those areas. Once the Times & News Publishing folks saw the "cash cow" they had & its potential, they started pumping a little more money into it. Then, with the demise of Z107, WGTY was there to pick up the pieces and has been going strong ever since.

Do we need ANOTHER Country station? No, but none of the existing Country stations would be able to serve that Adams-Hanover-York County area like WGTY does, so it would do no good for them to even try. You need a local station with a signal that will cover that area completely AND put the MAJOR DOLLARS behind it to promote the station to give WGTY a run for thier money, but any of the stations mentioned that would have that capability are no way going to change their formats, and the others (like Frederick and Hagerstown) are too far away.

When you are the only game in town in this type market, you get great numbers. John's right when he says that those listeners are incredibly loyal...you could probably take all the personalities off that station (no offense, WGTY folks) and that station would still get awesome numbers. But that's just my opinion...I could be wrong :)
