Why does WLIR have so much dead air?

I was a devout LIR listener when it played Alternative music but after the switch to ESPN, I would say I've listened no more than a total of 3 minutes...but on Belmont Stakes day, I wanted to give it a shot. I knew ESPN had a lot going on with the race and wanted to check it out. So I tuned in several times and what-do-I-hear?...dead air. What's with that!
And when I actually heard some audio, I also heard that annoying "rasberry" sound every 5 seconds. It was too distracting to listen to.
What's going on over there? Holy cow!
If they're gonna miss a sporting event, spin a tune or something!

are they automated? could be that.....or a bad board op, bad signal.....or a combo of all.....
