Why does WLVT-TV, Channel 39, need a radio station?

Just a question...do we really need another NPR affiliate in town? Don't we have enough with WDIY, and all of the multiple translators in town? As you may or may not know, a partnership with (read that as planning to takeover) WXLV-FM, Schnecksville is currently in progress.

Is this really necessary?

Short answer to your question: No.

WLVT really is dead set on getting an NPR sister station. They tried going for WDIY, but WDIY's members fought it successfully. Now they're onto college stations.

Can't figure it.

why muhlenburg? why not lafayette college's useless radio station WJRH.the students don't use it that much.104.9 is a wasteland.and WDIY is just fine the way they are.i agree...we don't need another NPR radio station! channel 39 leave WMUH alone.

I'd agree about WJRH, but think about it. WLVT's apparent goal is a signal comperable to WDIY. WJRH can't be heard beyond Easton and Phillipsburg.

The 104.9 frequency would have to go, if Ch. 39 took it over. The 10 watt license is grandfathered in on the commercial band. They would obviously want more coverage...but it is not unheard of to have a non-comm station on the commercial portion of the band. Maybe they could take over WJRH, and maybe apply for a power increase, kick WXPN's translator on 104.9 out of here, and start transmitting from the WXPN translator site in N. Whitehall Township.

hummmmm.that's not a bad idea! truth is WJRH is really only for lafayette students.i should know.i can't do shows there anymore cause i'm from town.it's a shame it's that way.channel 39 can have 104.9.nobody in the easton-phillipsburg community would care.WJRH used to be at 90.5.how they got 104.9 is a mystery! there's no one i know in this area that says...wow! WJRH is a cool station!

My guess is that the NPR spoken-word format, in general, is growing in popularity and listenership, and the opportunity to do cross-promotion and joint fundraising will result in incremental fundraising $$ into WLVT that exceed the cost of radio programming.

FWIW, you'd need both the Lafayette station plus WMUH to get the whole valley -- WMUH peters out east of Bethlehem.

WXLV is more efficient...would reach Nazarath...

This according to the Radio-Locator.com contours.
