Why doesn't Pittsburgh have a rock station?

A mixed rock station would be great for Pittsburgh!

Pretty sure WDXD and WDVE are "mixed rock".

WDVE is an Active Rock (It will play Hard and Classic Rock, phenomenal station)
WXDX is an Alternative Rock. (Also, new and old Alternative)
The Pittsburgh radio market is one of the better markets. If only there were less Froggy and Christian Contempary (considering there's three of each).

Although, WXDX is more of an Active Rock - Alternative (as it plays Shinedown, Evanescense)

Honestly, Pittsburgh is covered rockwise.

But wxdx does not play megadeth tho! Dve is classic rock not active rock Krock in 2004 was an active rock station.

Classic Rock stations don't play "Bully" by Shinedown (2012).

Just look at the station playlist.

Wdve sometimes do play new rock not enough for me.

I like kve alittle better than dve.

Isn't KVE classic rock?

I'd imagine XDX would be your preferred one for new rock,

Actually rocky99 would be. But I have this iPod and it's pandora! :)

I won't dispute you on Froggy. However, what three Christian Contemporary stations? There may be two and a third, but one has to stretch for that.

WPKV, K-Love's FM 98.3, is the only full-time CCM station in Pittsburgh proper. It is simulcast on sibling WKEL on FM 98.5 licensed to Confluence, but its signal is in the southeastern corner of the market.

Salem's WORD-101.5 has CCM on the weekend, but is talk and ministry during the week.

There might be CCM on some of the college radio, but we're talking low-power outlets in the 88-92 mhz band that usually don't get beyond their campuses.

If you're saying religious stations in general, one can find a lot of religion on Pittsburgh radio. But only one is on FM within the market itself.

The WAOB (We Are One Body) network airs on FM 106.7 as well as AMs 860 and 1510, but it is oriented toward Catholic worship.

There are Family Radio FMs in Johnstown and Youngstown, oriented toward cultured music, Scripture readings and ministry. (And, yes, before his stroke, Harold Camping's observations.)

Salem also has WPIT-730 whose day is split between ministry and conservative talk.

There also is Wilkins' WWNL-1080, which is a mix of ministry, infomercials and talk from dawn to dusk, 810 Inc.'s WEDO-810 with a mainly-Catholic ministry schedule in the morning and various ministries in the weekend mix, occasional ministries on Bob Stevens' AMs 620 and 770 and the Rev. Loran Mann's WGBN-1150 with African-American Gospel music.

I'm not insulting the format! (and I'm a Pittsburgh radio novice)

Nobody is suggesting you are. One of my points is, there is a variety of stations in the market with Christian programming but few of them have formats in common. The other is, most of the religious stations are on AM, with only two center-city outlets on FM. By the way, if you're a Pittsburgh radio novice, I wish you well in plunging into the variety that you will find here, bizarre as that variety often will be. I've been involved in various aspects of radio for most of my life and I still feel like a novice on more than one occasion.

Back to the topic at hand, why doesn't Pittsburgh have a mixed rock station? Here's why...radio stations are in business to make money. When the numbers skew downward, the product needs to be changed. Station owners could care less (to a point) what a cult of listeners want. It's been that way since 'format radio' as we know it first arrived on the scene. If it doesn't produce the numbers, something has to change. You either adjust the format clock or change the format altogether.

Great example of this...the failure of K-Rock, and then the 'rebirth' of B-94.

So the short answer is this...Pittsburgh doesn't want it.

It's also about the demographics of the market. 1 of every 6 listeners in this market is a female over 55. DVE is a Rock station with an adult focus (that's their rationale for playing the same songs for the last 30 years). The young male demo here just isn't big enough, that's why CC has to supplement the X with Madden and the Pens.

And I would argue that even that "young male demo" does not have the same tastes that young males in say, LA or Boston have. If it did, the X wouldn't be playing one-hit-wonder grunge from 20 years ago.

My friends who are programmers in other markets say they see lots of kids who like older rock, because their parents control the car radio (unlike me, who puts up with Radio Disney). You would have been amazed by the number of kids at the Van Halen show last week.

I would Like to See another Rock Station in this area like the old 93.7 K-Rock but without the Talk. We lack a lot of 80s and current Rock in this city. DVE plays mostly Classic Rock and The X is mostly Talk. I Would Like to see a mixed Rock/Alternative station like WMMR-FM in Philadelphia,WWDC in Washington DC,or WNOR in Norfolk Virginia.

MMR is a bad example, mornings are entirely talk, it's morning show runs more then average, plus untill 5PM it has a Classic Rock lean.

Since we have no real rock stations here in central PA, I listen mostly to DC-101 and 105.9 The X on iHeartradio when I'm in the car. We have a pathetic station called 105.7 The X from Harrisburg, but it is just a step above 'DVE when it comes to classic rock versus today's rock. Neither The X in Harrisburg nor 'DVE qualify as "Active Rock" in my opinion.
