why dosent philly have a spanish fm station

how come a big east coast city like philly has no fm spanish station while nyc has three isnt there a big population of hispanic people in philly/camdem area does the station on 690 am get good ratings

it would be a good idea to have a spanish station...a strong FM signal could serve Reading/Allentown, which has a very thick hispanic population

Let me ask you do -gooders something, if your so concerned if Philly has a latin station or not, would you be listening to it daily? How about attending their promotions?

The Philly market has Irish ethniciy of 11%, Italian-9%, German-9%, Polish-7%, English/French/Greek/Asian other-30%, Hispanic-5%, if you want ANOTHER Spanish format, than what about the other European ethnics, that have a larger percentage. The largest ethnic peoples in NYC, besides Spanish and Black, is Italian-12%, where is the full time Italian format. Boston has over 15%-Irish, again, where is that format, and on and on all over the USA, reason being, these nationalities think, act and live American. I cannot understand why everyone in the media wants to cater to this certain ethnic group. It cannot be the $$

It's not that everyone once to cater to this ethnic group, but because there gonna have to. It's called the LCD target, as in Lowest common denominator. One thing I'll say about the hispanic audience, that they are very loyal and in away behind the times. Their mentality is I've been shoppping or doing business with this place for 10 years or a long period of time, why change? Sure they'll hit the malls if something new came into their community, but they'll still support the local shopkeeper. And that's the way they are with radio.
I worked in a hispanic town on an AM station, and when a new contemporary FM came into town, we still came above them.
While people with spendable incomes moves with technology to satellite, IPOD, Internet for music, they'll be one of the many minority groups that will still listen to AM/FM that will support their programming and community. Especially in thew low income bracket.
What get's me and why and your wondering about the do- gooder post above us, is a bunch idiotic white American guys so concerned with other ethnicity, Why we don't have this on this band, and why we don't have that in this market, like their going to listen to it for their own enjoyment and entertainment.
Meanwhile one day when it comes to their jobs benefits, and culture status they'll be asking the same questions.

Im sorry, I just have to post on this one.. I dont even life in the Philly market, BUT geez why would you want a hispanic fm? Move to ATLANTA we have 5 to 6 hispanic stations.. Its not what its made out to be.. Its just another station thats gone to a lanuage that I cant understand.. I DONT WANT TO LEARN SPANISH EITHER! I should not have too. I was born in america. and Dammit, I am tired of pushing one for English. Im so very sorry, but this is such a touchy topic and its time it wasnt.. If the hispanics want to continue to migrate here, they need to learn our language, obey our laws, which mean Drivers Licence's, Legal Insurence,
and most of all to adapt to our cultures.

I agree, but tell that to Mr. Blue Laws or A Frankentown or whatever the **** is name is and see if they get it.

Maybe a proud American like yourself should get a better grasp on the punctuation and spelling of the English language.

Oddities

Anyone else notice the people on these message boards who push English the most are the same ones who seem to have the most trouble properly typing in that very language?

Beat Me To It

John Q, looks like we were typing at the same time... You were a bit faster...

Not every city MUST HAVE a Spanish FM station. Frankly, the Boston market has a higher percentage of Latinos than Philly and it doesn't have a Spanish FM either. And, the economics aren't even good enough for it to be inevitable.

Philly doesn't have 3 all major Spanish TV networks either. Why? Not enough of an audience. Telefutura has no affiliate here. If Reading has such a high percentage of Latinos, then why not ask about flipping a Reading station to Spanish? Perhaps the economics are better.

There are many markets that do not have big enough Latino audiences to support a Spanish FM signal. Try Philly, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Buffalo, Baltimore, Minneapolis, and others. Though New York has 3, New York is a completely different market ethnically. There's no comparison with Philly. Just because it's a big city does not mean that it NEEDS a Spanish FM.

One last thing. Spanish signals (radio or TV) don't bill all that well. In fact they seem to bill worse (for the size of audience) than hip hop or oldies stations. I've been wondering when station owners will notice this - but in their quest for future growth, they haven't yet. It'll happen one of these days.

And no, personally I'd rather not have an FM signal in Philadelphia flip to Spanish. There's little enough variety as it is.

Telefutura is on Channel 28 over the air, they are also on all the cable networks in the area. Comcast 251. There are over 5 Spanish Cable networks and over 30 All Spanish Music Channels also available on Cable. For a population flooding into the USA, legally or not, they sure are getting their "more than fair" share.

It's an LP, so its not on my cable system in Chester County - except on digital. And, I thought that was the national feed. The other 2 that you refer to are not over the air, are they? Seems like they are bird feed that are supplied via cable. If you buy the Latino digital package via Comcast, you get a lot more than 5.

All that being said, I agree. The Latinos get far more channels than their fair share. Just be grateful that this is not the case on the radio as it is in markets like Houston, LA, etc. Literally 40% of the FM commercial stations in Houston are en espanol.

It's overkill that does Latinos no favors - just provides a crutch that makes it easier for them to not assimilate. Nor will they succeed here (as an ethnic group) in this way.

Channel 28 is receivable in the Philly Metro, over the air, with rather good quality, Channels 62 and 65, are also able to be seen with a good UHF-television/antenna, that makes 3. With cable, 62 and 65 are carried on the analog tier, where-as 28 is on digital. Like you stated, there are also many Hispanic upgrades, that can bring up to 50 or more channels, no other group can boast that. Not bad for a so-called minority group. Again, I ask, why all this special treatment for Hispanics. This seems to be a sensible question, due to the fact that there are many other ethnics who have nothing and never did. Why is Mr. Cigar smoking, white ******(won't say), middle aged, bald headed, surburban, not on my block, mansion living with maids, media executive doing this. He is the same person, dictating, in his plush, Mid-town, office building, pushing all the Rap and Hip Hop, force feeding it to Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea, like it or not, its whats hip.

And adding answers to your questions or statements, no matter how much they push there a agenda, it relates still to poor record (CD) sales, newspaper circulations, 80% of the cable lineup with little viewers, and of course.......continued droppage of radio listeners. Nobody's buying the seedy side of Entertainment Tonight.

I also witness most of these Rap/Hip Hop lovers don't even listen to the radio, they say its too VANILLA and watered down, just not their kind. They mostly have CD's and Tapes blasting in their car, with violent gangsta Rap. It proves once again, the stations catering to this element are loosing all the way around, the target they want is not supporting them. That being said, I cannot understand why there is not a full time Active Rocker, the AR listener is loyal, dedicated and spends big bucks, takes in the age group from 15 to 65. Are they so brain-washed not to know this. If one of these many failing urban stations would flip to Active and pulled a 3.0 or under, they would still do good in their demo and make tons of cash. Example is WPLJ in NYC, although its not Active and has low numbers it still is a huge Cash Cow.....

Yes it's true, since the 90's , you poke your head in any 11th grade driver's car or higher, and most likely the music that's blasting out of his car is his cd's or mp3's ( I don't know about tape anymore) but most likely he isn't listening to Rap 105 or Hip Hop 98.7. Maybe the morning show ( The dog pound or something), but that's it.
You will still get the 12 -15 year olds that are too young to drive, does not have satellite radio, and has a boom box on their night table who will still listen, but will quickly grow out of it like the current 17-20 year olds.
Since many stations are under the same roof the past 10 years,...... they can afford to sell the hip hop /Rap station as a package deal that comes along with their country or AC or talk station that carries it over financially.
Yes these rap staions still get high numbers but advertisers obviously don't want. But if they can sell a few buggle gum commercials, Gap commercials, concerts, and Cd releases, plus lower package rates of the other formats, it's still a few extra bucks they didn't have before.

A quick search of the FCC database shows, as I expected, that channel 28 is WFPA-CA - a low power station. It may come in well in much of the area, but it is still low powered and is NOT covered by the must carry rules. So, my comparison remains valid. For example Boston, with no Spanish FM (and probably none coming any time soon) has 3 full-power Spanish TV affliliates that cover all of eastern New England.

Many cities have low power Spanish TV stations, some also program other languages such as Italian or French. That a big city like Philly does not have all 3 big Spanish network affiliates on full-power signals tells us something about a lack of audience for such programming. After all, there are elements in the industry who are stopping at nothing to push this programming - even where it has no support.

And, I do believe that Telefutura on my cable system in Chester Co. is the satellite feed and not ch. 28.

All that being said, there's no reason for Philadelphia to have a major FM flip to Spanish. The demos don't call for it. Very few fresh immigrants in the market and those who are here are too small in number and lacking in income to be of interest to advertisers.

On the other hand, hip hop and R&B have good demos in this market - whether rock fans like that or not. Lots of whites and AAs who enjoy the music. And, many 2nd-3rd generation latinos do too.

With an attitude like this, some might consider you to be 'lazy'--an oft repeated stereotype of the very folks you're talking about.
