why espn 950 doesn't have local phillies feed including all network stations?

I checked WEEU WBCB etc national feed on there! 1210 the only station with Harry and the boys! What's goin' on with the world series?

WDEL (Wilmington) also is airing the ESPN radio feed rather than the Phillies radio network.

Re: why espn 950 doesn't have local phillies feed including all network stations

This is the way it's done in the World Series, which may explain why you Phillies fans aren't familiar with the practice ;)

ONLY the flagship station gets to carry the call from the local announcers. The rest of the network gets fed the call from the national network that holds the rights, which has been ESPN Radio for the last few years.

It's the same deal in Tampa - the flagship, WHNZ 1250, has the local announcers, while whatever other stations the Rays had on their network get ESPN instead.

I believe the result, in certain cases, can be ESPN being heard on multiple stations in the same market, where one station has the rights via ESPN directly and the other is getting ESPN fed by the team network.

The same happened with the Eagles in the Super Bowl, only WYSP could carry Merill & Mike. College football is different - the Penn State network stations carry the Steve Jones-Jack Ham PSU broadcasts for bowl games even with Westwood 1 affiliates carrying the network feed in the same markets.

WNPV has the ESPN coverage of the series too - they run ESPN radio evenings & weekends also.

In 1980, didn't KYW (the Phillies' flagship that championship season) carry the national feed of the WS? Wasn't HK publicly upset that he couldn't call the Series on his team's network?

I assume the team gets to pick who the flagship station is. I'd bet the Eagles would pick WYSP. WIP might carry the Westwood One feed, but probably not.

Bottom line, the ONLY place to hear the local broadcasts of all the Phillies world series games is 1210 WPHT-AM.

Yes. It was after 1980, when Philly fans complained in large numbers that MLB changed the rule inwhich the flagship station could have the local guys.

Yes, in 1980 the national broadcast (I guess it was CBS radio back then) had exclusive rights, and the local broadcasters could not do the broadcast. The Phillies put out an album with highlights from that season, and the world series highlights were recorded by Harry Kalas after the series ended. I don't remember the year this rule was lifted...was it the next season? I don't recall if Harry and the guys did the '83 series, but I do remember that they did the '93 series on what was then Oldies 1210.

GO PHILLIES!!!

It also sounds like WPHT has to clear some or all of the ESPN national spots--last night they were mentioning the national "presented by" sponsor each half-inning, and Mike & Mike were heard selling things on 1210 at least three times during Game 1.

Is it true Harry Kalas has recorded a new record in honor of the Phillies' 2008 season?

That seems like an unfair position to put the flagship station in. I can understand clearing the spots, but do they have to make you clear spots voiced by talent that competes against you every morning?

At least they pick a clear channel AM as the flagship so that half the country can hear that station at night

1984(Detroit-San Diego) was the first year that the flagship stations of the two teams were allowed to carry the Series...so the complaints from Philly fans would have been from '83 as well as '80. At least Kalas has lasted long enough to broadcast four pennant winners and two world champs!
