Bottom line, the ONLY place to hear the local broadcasts of all the Phillies world series games is 1210 WPHT-AM.Scott Fybush said:This is the way it's done in the World Series, which may explain why you Phillies fans aren't familiar with the practice
ONLY the flagship station gets to carry the call from the local announcers. The rest of the network gets fed the call from the national network that holds the rights, which has been ESPN Radio for the last few years.
Yes. It was after 1980, when Philly fans complained in large numbers that MLB changed the rule inwhich the flagship station could have the local guys.ixnay said:In 1980, didn't KYW (the Phillies' flagship that championship season) carry the national feed of the WS? Wasn't HK publicly upset that he couldn't call the Series on his team's network?

It's the same deal in Tampa - the flagship, WHNZ 1250, has the local announcers, while whatever other stations the Rays had on their network get ESPN instead.
I believe the result, in certain cases, can be ESPN being heard on multiple stations in the same market, where one station has the rights via ESPN directly and the other is getting ESPN fed by the team network.

JaMa said:Yes, in 1980 the national broadcast (I guess it was CBS radio back then) had exclusive rights, and the local broadcasters could not do the broadcast. The Phillies put out an album with highlights from that season, and the world series highlights were recorded by Harry Kalas after the series ended.

It also sounds like WPHT has to clear some or all of the ESPN national spots--last night they were mentioning the national "presented by" sponsor each half-inning, and Mike & Mike were heard selling things on 1210 at least three times during Game 1.

I don't remember the year this rule was lifted...was it the next season? I don't recall if Harry and the guys did the '83 series, but I do remember that they did the '93 series on what was then Oldies 1210.
GO PHILLIES!!!
