WHY FLIP WSKO-FM AND TO WHAT?

This topic pops up every so often and obviously it's a case of a station with no listeners that apparently fits in well with Citadel's business plan meaning Score insiders can be very defensive about the mere mention of a flip. We all know how rabid sports people can be about the little isolated arenas they live in.

But how could Citadel flip? Classic rock would be the obvious choice but would they spend the money? Would it be nothing but a redux of The Hawk which failed? Full staffing is out of the question in the current climate and there is no one in that building who would sound remotely convincing even tracking a classic rocker.

Then you have the situation of PRO-FM and LITE collectively burying Coast. Wouldn't the reverse happen with Clear Channel owning the classic rock and hits audience already with HJY and B101? Granted B101 probably doesn't have the listener loyalty that HJY has but still.

I think unless Citadel sells the frequency Providence will have one AM and two FM sports stations even though only one of the three (WEEI) really matters.

They can keep both. What they could do is try separating programming with another day part but on the AM. I don't think a 12-3 show would hurt "Scores" image.I am surprised they didnt want to keep RUSH and put him on 790.Now that they have Imus in the morning.Keep the simulcast afternoons, nights and weekends for games and when Gresh is on ESPN.

Splitting un important day parts would only increase revenue.

Oldies. Plain and simple. When WWBB/"B101" jettisoned the oldies, they jettisoned half of their audience (myself included). The Providence market is ripe for another oldies station, a-la WZZN/94.7 in Chicago. The True Oldies Channel, while not being the highest rated station in the Chicago market, has a very faithful audience. And while 99.7 is not the greatest signal in the market, the listeners would be willing to "squint" to get it. The Providence market has too many sports stations as it is. Since Citadel is familiar with the True Oldies Channel (co-owning WZZN), this might be a good fit for Providence. IMHO.

Nobody's flipping any station to anything in Providence. Too much time money talent and motivation would be involved. There's a lack of all of that. Most look at radio as drudgery around here. The business didn't live up to what they wanted it to be and the ones who keep their jobs complain about them. I don't know what Cat Country's demos are but I'm willing to bet an oldies station's demos would be similar. So the agencies wouldn't place as many buys. Get a local staff that knows how to sell. If the economy keeps going the way it is I think agencies will take a hard look at who the desirable demos with money really are.

The Score is one station that ought to thank its lucky stars for consolidation or it wouldn't have its big sisters to support it.

Gresh is the only thing carrying that station. If WSKO was to fold. Gresh would be picked up by WEEI,ESPN or something before he went to bed that night.
