WRUF has nearly all Alachua County businesses, as they did when they were Rock104. They have a moderate amount of national, but not quite as much as they did in the rock days.

WHY FORMAT FLIP IN GAINEVILLE FLORIDA??

WRUF-FM may actually perform well over time in Gainesville, Alachua County and North Florida. Again, I don't expect to see any major impact in the MSA as a whole, but it may do fine as a "superserve" Gainesville country outlet. Gator sports should also contribute tremendously to the overall bottom line.

Someone mentioned AAA further back in the thread. I would love to program AAA (Adult Album Alternative) in Gainesville. I think the audience is there. I just don't see a frequency where it would work. Of the lowly-rated stations, I suppose 100.9 would be my first choice. But they just recently committed to Broadcast Architecture's AC/smooth jazz hybrid service after a decade of smooth jazz. 99.5 is way down there, but their syndicated talk lineup would be expensive to cancel. 106.9 and its sister stations are in the process of being sold; AAA is not a profit maximizer for a new company.
WRUF-FM is slightly ahead of heritage WTRS by 0.5 in the 12+ persons category. This is about what it was producing as Rock 104. Also keep in mind that the majority of 103.7s numbers are coming from Gainesville and North Florida while WTRS' numbers are coming from Marion County. I did hear a Ford of Ocala commercial on WRUF-FM one day last week.
Summer 2011 has WOGK still at #1 with a 9.8 share, WTRS at #5 with a 4.7, and WRUF-FM at #10 with a 2.9 share. Summer to Summer WRUF dropped 3.7 to 2.9.
Gator football will give it an upward bounce in the Fall, but 4-hours-a-week for 13 weeks a year (including a bowl game) isn't a formula for long-term success. There are those other 156 hours a week... and those other 39 weeks a year. And UF hoops, as good as Billy D's team may be, isn't a big draw. And when the core Country listener tunes in and hears something other than the Miranda Lambert tune they're seeking, there are (at least) two other buttons they can hit.
But maybe we're not being fair. Give it another year or five.
