Why Gator/Sunny/Kool Are Hurting

Consider that none of them had a signficant audience in
Jacksonville before their recent changes.

So is it any wonder they struggle to find a place?

Without some kind of outside marketing
how will the listeners find them?

100.7 It's been a long time since this signal was a player. You might even say the last real momentum on that frequency was when WOKV used it to simulcast before moving to AM-690 (early 1990's?).

99.9 has been a Daytona station, who in Jax ever would think to dial in?
While they have a little traction, a 2-share isn't exactly putting a
scare into Clear Channel.

94.1 has been a St. Augustine station, see above. While it's too early to speak on ratings impact, it's biggest competitor may well be Jones College!).

At least Cox did some TV for EAGLE when the switched formats,
and of course they had a significant audience from the oldes
and the Xmas stunt. Same from Cox when POINT came on-board, recall seeing TV ads pretty frequently for awhile.

Clear Channel continues to push to WQIK with all those billboards, which I gotta belive will go to the new L&T station.

I agree. Listeners tend to go with the status quo such as presets on their car radio etc. so there has to be awareness that other alternatives exist. Without advertising - it's tough.

And let's assume there are a percentage of folks out there who on occasion use their scan button (in the car radio example). Then the station has to be good or unique enough for a listener to tune in regularly. Has that happened for KOOL FM? No. And it won't happen any time soon. I've promised a post about why I think 60s/70s hybrid stations will not enjoy the success of a traditional oldies station and so I won't get into that here.

I don't listen to country music. But I would think if you become a player in an already crowded field, then you want to be different. Perhaps country gold etc. From what I have read on various posts, there is not much different among the 3 country stations. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will steer me straight.

And finally, there's Sunny 94.1. They are doing something that is for the most part - different. I'm actually enjoying listening to the station. But I would not have even known about them if it weren't for reading posts about them on this board.

A few posts ago, I said I would reserve judgement on Briggs (Kyle Stevens) doing mornings on Sunny. But like the 4 Tops once said, I can't help myself. Listening to him reminds me of hearing FM way before the stations went more main stream. Back then the jocks sounded like they were in some black lagoon and as high as a kite. OK maybe Briggs doesn't sound high, but the delivery is so sedate that it doesn't sound natural. For crying out, speak like a normal person. I don't know what that is all about. It's not real and frankly it's terminally boring. This is not a good move if you want to attract listeners. Maybe I'm expecting too much. I'm curious to see what y'all think.

Can't see L&T going to WQIK (is that what you meant?). 93.3 makes more sense.

Why Gator is NOT hurting!

I knew what he meant. He is saying that any of the billboards that have WQIK on it now will go to promote the station that will carry Lex and Terry. And besides anyone that says Gator is hurting may want to look at the numbers again. To pull a 2.1 in your first full book in Jacksonville after moving from a small market (Daytona) is pretty good considerning that some other stations that have been around much longer can even do that in one book. So I would back off saying Gator is hurting from anything. And if drawing in 10,000 people for a free concert at the Jacksonville Landing says anything for a one night concert last week (still going with free concerts)I would be careful about hurting for this station.

Renda slowly but surely is beginning to market WKQL and WGNE. Both have billboards up around town and hopefully in 2006 more marekting dollars will be allocated.

With WKQL signal issues they will never be a top 5 station in the 25-54 demo but they have the potentail to be a Top 10. In their core audience of 35-54 they will do ok. The biggest problem they have is attracting female listeners.

WGNE which will receive plenty of record label support will do well in the market. Remeber it has only been out for one book.

WSOS will become a Jax station once the tower moves closer.

One thing I am sure Renda will not do is allow either WKQL or WSOS to take share from WEJZ.

Do you know where these billboards are located at? I hope Renda takes up promoting Gator on one of the billboards in Middleburg since it is the COL. Middleburg has a big market of country listners especially ones that listen to WQIK or Rooster and I know some still do not know that Gator is here in town and that they have Dixie on their channel. It would be great because that could pull listners from those two stations and put them on to listing to Gator. Hey how about a billboard with Dallas and Dixie on it promoting the morning show. That would be superior because they will win right over.

As billboards for KOOL they should do more of this and they need to get more jocks on to get that Top 10 rating. I hope they do soon. Do you know if Briggs is going to take over programming WSOS and that a new PD is coming on for KOOL? Thanks

I know there was a board at the corner of Atlantic and Southside but it has moved. Koll has a board on W I-10 near Casset ave. Those are the ones I have seen.

As for Briggs who knows what Renda will do.

Re: Thoughts on L&T

The obvious options for L&T on CC/Jacksonville are:
93.3- replacing Monsters (possible)
97.9-anchoring format change to Classic Rock or HOT TALK (unlikely)
107.3-anchoring format change to Classic Rock or HOT TALK (I say most likely)

Revenue potential will drive this decision (something rarely discussed on this board!).

The most REVENUE upside for CC is on the bigger signal (107.3)

Further, CC is rumoured to be working on a full lineup of HOT TALK/GUY TALK and L&T could very well be the moring show for that.

A few weeks ago a L&T "insider" said that CC promised 50 stations by the end of the year. At last count their website only lists 19 stations, so something BIG is in the works!

Finally, consider that the return of L&T doesn't guarantee similar results for their new station. My guess is that they will get most, but not all their audience back (and smaller signal stations would impede that).

I say they get maybe 80% of their audience back. (which leaves many thousands of men up for grabs)...

Why less than 100%?

Discuss among yourselves....
