why I hate sports radio 1060

I was in a huge traffic jam today on the Expressway I tuned in to KYW to get the facts, what I heard was hey the Eagles are doing this and that. A few weeks ago I saw large plums of black smoke coming from the refineries I tuned to KYW and heard the Phillies are rebounding should be a good series. A week before that there were huge thunder head coming my way, clouds and lighting and it looked dangerous, I tuned to KYW and guess what they were yakking about the Flyers next season and on and on. There were a few shootings in my neighborhood and I tuned to 1060 and low and behold the Sixers new trades were being discussed. I heard the market had a bad time the other day and I wanted to get the dow results and went to KYW and they were discussing Sports yet again. Everytime I go to KYW for current news, information or severe weather, they are constantly talking sports, why the hell dont they just become another in the long tiresome list of sports formats in this city. When 106.9 was talk they had current happenings right on the spot and they were a talker, they should of never been sold, I think they would of put KYW to rest for good..

Yesterday morning as I was leaving for work, I got an alert that Gov. Corbett would be speaking shortly on the Philly school budget crisis, and as WHYY was airing BBC Newshour I figured I'd hear it on KYW. When I get to work and pull my phone from my pocket, I see alerts on what the Gov stated in his speech- a speech KYW didn't carry.

However I DID hear a pretty great Wal*Mart advertisement.

Thanks for nothing, KYW!

It couldn't possibly be that you guys listened at the wrong times? I'm sure KYW is more than sports and Walmart commercials.

Exactly. Some regular listeners to classic hits stations complain because they hear Hotel California 3 times a day. I bet regular listeners to KYW heard what the governor said, and knew all about the traffic jam. But when you tune in when it's convenient for YOU, it might not be when the story you want is being covered. That's how mass media works. You want it to be on demand, and radio is not an on-demand service.

They could have at least led off the 10am hour with a report on the Gov's speech laying out what he said. The TV stations were certainly able to hammer out reports right quick. But no, they instead lead with a days-old story of a woman murdered in the woods.

I've heard 1060 break up regular programming before to carry a speech or press conference, and I simply (foolishly) expected the same this time around.

I tuned into my TV newscast at around 6:15 and wouldn't you know it, there was a guy doing a sports report. Then a woman came on at 6:20 and gave me the weather, when I wanted to know what the top news was. Well, isn't this a silly post?

Like most All-News stations, KYW does the top of the news at :00 and :30, they do traffic on the :02's, they give weather updates six times per hour, they do business news twice per hour and sports reports twice per hour. That's how it works. Maybe in sports-crazy Philadelphia, a big Eagles or 76ers story gets into the general news, as well as during the sports updates. But KYW hasn't become WIP, excluding real news for sports news. They're co-owned. It wouldn't make any sense.

I actually think in this fast-paced world of ours, KYW maybe should follow the WINS 20 minute news cycle, so you hear the top stories at :00, :20 and :40. But WINS NYC is the only News station that does it that way. All the other All-News stations in the U.S. and Canada do the top stories at :00 and :30, with maybe a few top headlines at :15 and :45. And as mentioned above, they rarely break up that cycle, except for a major presidential speech, not even most Obama news conferences. You may have a gripe that the KYW reporter didn't get the Governor's story on quickly enough but I don't think WCBS or WINS would carry NY Gov. Cuomo's speeches either.

You have put your finger on radio's essential problem and its flaw. The world has become an on-demand world. And radio is NOT on-demand.

For the record, 1010 WINS - like KYW - operates on a 30 minute cycle, regardless of what the slogan says.

The only other Group W all news station was KFWB.

In competition with CBS format all news stations, like WCBS or KNX, Group W format stations have an inherent disadvantage of shorter TSLs. The question should be why KYW has not embraced the CBS all news format. Yes, I know it didn't work when WCAU tried it almost 40 years ago, but then WCAU was attempting to unseat an established and dominant competitor. When WCBS launched all news against 1010 WINS, WINS was not so well established or dominant and 'CBS targeted the tri-state suburbs where it had (and has) a far better signal.
