Why is 104.5 now running CBS network news?

They dropped Channel 5 news updates a while back, then recently picked up weather from Ch. 5. But I don't recall hearing CBS news until this a.m. Would Fox appreciate that? They're a Fox affilate, at least Fox Sports.

Fox News is taken (WSM-AM) CBS was the only 24 hour source avalable

On air personalities were quick to comment about adding CBS to the Zone lineup. Darren McFarland said,"CBS knows how to step it up and bring it to the table. This move reminds me of the Cleveland Indians' off season acquisitions and Kentucky's NCAA Final Four appearances." Plaz said,"This ain't my first rodeo with CBS." Frank Wycheck compared the acquisition to signing unrestricted free agents, but Mark Howard was quick to interrupt Wycheck and not let him finish the sentence. Kevin Ingram is learning new CBS voice imitations by mimicing the ever bitter Billy Packer, his basketball partner Jim Nantz and the always overdramatic Kevin Harlan.

Remember that this gives them the right to air Westwood 1 content such as Monday night football. I wondered why this was happening at the time but I heard a westwood 1 game the Saturday before last on 104.5. Personally I think that it is good that CBS has a good presence in the market again.

Different products. 104.5 aired the non-exclusive brief Fox update, while 650 airs the exclusive 5-minute Fox newsbreaks.

Fox doesn't care. Fox radio news is distributed for Fox by Premiere, but Fox only licenses the Fox name to Premiere for its radio sports product. Premiere may care. 104.5 also gets Rome from Premiere.

Of course, CBS does own CBS Radio, but it's their sister station Westwood One that distributes CBS Radio and does all of the work for it. Of course, W1 also owns NBC Radio.

Why are they doing it? Is it maybe because they don't have to air the ad that goes with it during the update itself?

Of course add on top of all this mess that Citadel now owns ABC Radio and are distributors for the still-Disney-owned ESPN Radio...

And now they're picking up Dan Patrick

And now the Zone's picking up Dan Patrick, which is distributed by Premiere, so it's not like they're trying to shed Premiere products. They'll delay to nights, since Patrick's show starts live at 8 a.m. CT.

I'm enjoying the CBS newsbriefs so far... it's not just the same top head lines every hour. Sometimes they'll hit just one story with a little depth, and it won't necessarily be the top story at the time. I still miss a local news product on the Zone, though.
