WHY IS AM600 KOGO SO AMATEURISH, SMALL TOWNISH?

If KOGO was getting the state and federal money that KPBS-FM is they would have an amazing news department and top notch programming!!

No, they would still have the same bad management making decisions on how to spend it. Can we actually believe that the current lineup is the best they can buy within their budget?

If KPBS-FM's budget is 10 million a year and 11% of that comes from the government then that would equal the entire KOGO talent budget for the year! KPBS does remotes with Neumann microphones and has an absurdly lavish news room most of which came from begging for it.

If KOGO was getting the state and federal money that KPBS-FM is they would have an amazing news department and top notch programming!! KPBS if they lost those funds would immediately cut back to the point (or worse) than KOGO or KFMB is right now!

KOGO used to have an amazing news department back when they shared facilities with Channel 10 at Hwy 94 & 47th. They also shared people who went back and forth in the hallway.

In the pre-Proposition 13 days, the state government used to be glad to give state-owned stations constant equipment upgrades and first class offices and newsrooms. They didn't have to ask all that much.

The way City College's KSDS was upgraded from a basement in the back of San Diego High School next to Balboa Stadium (I did airshifts there, so I remember) to the palace that they got in 1971 was like moving from Imperial Beach (yik!) to the Taj Mahal.

Back in the bad old days, KSDS had an old Western Electric board that shocked you if you pushed certain buttons. The turntables did funny things. Suddenly, everything was 180 degrees different. The only thing station managers James Dark and Hope Shaw needed were turbans. They already had the dirty looks on their faces. : )

I'd hate to see them try to make an upgrade like that now.

From the pictures that I have seen of the original KSDS they had a blue GE console not a Western Electric console for the control board. In fact KSDS still has pictures of it. The only stations that ever had Western Electric consoles were KFSD/KOGO and KSDO in San Diego. I don't know what they had in TJ

Well forgive me for being there and being wrong. Obviously, you weren't there, and you're right.

The blue GE you're referring to was a production board. The Western Electric was the main control console.

But then, you're the same guy who said 9/11 would have been a lot worse if Gore had been President, so I'll just consider the source.

Rico you might want to look at the pictures that are online the main control console at 7th and Ash was the custom built blue board!!! You can ask Bill Lipis or Jack Vincent want their phone numbers?? Get a clue

Here's your first clue: KSDS was NEVER at 7th & Ash. That site was occupied by KCBQ and later KPRI.

Now, once again, how many less people died on 9/11 because Bush was President?  ???

Call James Dark at City College. I think he still maintains an office there. He goes back 45 years with KSDS. He'll tell you about KSDS's history at 7th & Ash, which is the same as the content of a black hole - nothing!

If you're going to argue, it really helps to have at least one correct fact. Once again, you don't.

KCBQ at 7th & Ash had the DJs upstairs with a big mirror above reflecting to the viewers on the sidewalks below. XETV was across the street in a section of the El Cortez. KFMB was also downtown, I think it was an old office building the station occupied. In its pre jazz days KSDS ran rather unconnectable programs like the German Press Review. 9-11 worse if Gore had been president? No, I don't think so. Gore would have actually read the intelligence report forecasting the attack rather than going on a month long vacation the month before the attack like Bush did, there would have been no 9-11.

James Dark died 1.5 years ago...

I was not aware of this. My faux pas.

It wasn't a news item that I saw like the passing of Hope Shaw was.
