Why is B101 gonna do better than Sunny? (And a little survey.)

Question 1: When Sunny did Christmas without B101 stepping on their toes, did they outperform B101 (in either the 12+ or the demos)?

Question 2: Everyone feels pretty certain that B101 is going to outperform Sunny in the book but I can't quite figure out why. Is B101's all-Christmas format really better than that of Sunny 104.5? Sunny was doing it longer and they're both playing songs the other won't touch. And Sunny really is "Philadelphia's original Christmas music station," regardless of how B101 chooses to twist the truth. If you head out on the streets and ask people what radio station comes to mind when they think of Christmas music, I feel sure the majority would mention Sunny. So...why is B101 expected to win?

Question 3 (to those of you who enjoy Christmas music): Which station do you prefer? And regardless of which you prefer, which do you actually find yourself listening to more frequently? (Really think about that second part.)

Sunny has to be the one I enjoy, I have not sampled B-101, I heard them in my friends car and they were bad. I did hear Sunny at the toll booths on the WW bridge and in several dollar stores, so Sunny is the Christmas music station of choice, from what I experienced. You are asking a die hard Metal Head, who also embraces Alternative and Hard Rock and for a station to pull me away from YSP, well who knows. I am glad Sunny started this music early, I would have no where to turn with YSP taking on this yakking daytime format. I might give Sunny a try after Christmas and see what they are like, with YSP probably going more talk and MMR just being MMR, where else can you go. G-Rock is OK, when you can pick them up for an alternative to YSP.

Re: Why I Listen to Sunny

I have really only listened to Sunny in the Christmas programming since 2002. I have heard B-101 on other people's radios, my impression is Sunny plays more "older" versions of Christmas music, which I prefer. B101 had chatty jocks, I'd rather have none for this kind of "background" music like Sunny on weekends. Sunny has the little movie/tv show Christmas clips, some interesting novelty songs thrown in - I've listened to a bunch of the other Christmas stations online from other markets, and I like Sunny more than any I've heard.
That being said, I don't listen from Dec. 26 until they go all Christmas, too much disco, would prefer a true soft gold-based AC.

I posted before that we had some 70+ 'seniors' over for Thanksgiving dinner and
they all loved the music on Sunny that day, not sure if they noticed the rock-influenced pieces but they loved the traditional songs being played.

Today we were in Daddypop's Diner in Hatboro - they always have on WOGL but today Sunny was on. We were in & out of stores in Peddler's Village and nearby and all had on Sunny. I haven't heard B101 in any stores so far. I assume these stores switched to Sunny back before B101 switched. Of course what will count is individuals listening, not stores, offices & restaurants, but my informal listening shows Sunny is on everywhere I've been.

Seems like a total matter of taste. While I appreciate the, for lack of a better term, "more classic" sound Sunny has, I like it in smaller doses than the more modern sound on the B.

I don't see it as twisting the truth; no one says Sunny wasn't the first station in the city to run weeks on end of nothing but holiday songs, but B and EZ 101 were doing Christmas music mixed in long before Sunny was born. Semantics? Sure. But find me one broadcaster who doesn't play on semantics to market themselves, either on the air or in the sales kit. Slicing and dicing is the name of the game.

I'd be interested to see the street survey results, but even if Sunny did come to more people's mind, it doesn't mean they change the radio dial in the offices and in the cars in large numbers. As radio geeks, we want to figure out things like where the overlap is and where the differences are, but I haven't met a single person who would change their listening from B to Sunny just because Sunny started on Labor Day (or at least it seemed like it). Finally, never underestimate the marketing. If virtually no one listens to Sunny in the first place, how many people are paying attention when they go all Christmas? (Tree/forrest....)

As noted above, enjoy the B, mostly to hear Faith Hill's "Where are you Christmas" most often...but seriously, I happen to enjoy the holiday songs done by the artists I listen to more regularly. That said, I listen to both B and Sunny less until Christmas Eve, this year tuning to Ben much more than I ever did to Mix, or The Point or any of the other stations, to hear a blend of the regular & Christmas songs. On Christmas Eve & day, there's no contest, the radio is still locked on 101.1. Maybe that's tradition from childhood, when my parents' giant console stereo never moved from 101, and churned out Christmas songs all day on the big morning, but so be it--I stick with them now.

On a side note about Sunny, the only person I know who was enthusiastic abot their early holiday start was a co-worker's 2-year-old, who begs for the "kissmas" songs every time she gets in the car, and emphatically shouts "NO TESH" every time one of his ideas-for-living segments comes on. Said co-worker has made a mental note never to tune to 104.5 next season to avoid what she calls the unending hell of non-stop Christmas songs.

I like Sunny 104.5's Christmas music variety this year. They play a lot of older classics I have never heard in my life. I don't listen to B101 much because it is a pain to listen to 101.1 in the Central Jersey area, because B101 and 101.1 Jack FM interfere with each other. The two Christmas stations I like most are Sunny 104.5 and Magic 98.3.<P ID="signature">______________

Because, overall, B101 kills Sunny in the ratings book after book. Most
people will gravitate to their favorite station if it plays Christmas music and, in Philadelphia, that station is usually B101. No matter, the subtle
differences that some people are pointing out here.

By trying to steal the title away from Sunny, they are implying that they were the first Philadelphia station to ever play Christmas music. It's just kinda silly. I don't understand when a station with no need to act out of desparation does just that.

But did Sunny do better than B101 when they did Christmas and B didn't?

Answer-I recall Sunny taking a bite out of B the first year they went all Christmas. I recall an article where B's GM said.."Had they listened to their own research, they would have flipped to Christmas that year." But they didn't beat B 12 plus or in the demos.

Answer-Simple..Jerry Lee's vault of cash. B's TV spots will air with more frequency than Sunny's ten second spot. B's cume was higher than Sunny going into the holidays. Couple that with the TV spots and B could afford to wait.

Neither....I'm listening to BEN-FM..whose mix is more A/C these days.
