Why is Classic Hits mostly un-challenged?

Are there ANY markets with two true classic hits stations? It seems it's become similar to Adult Hits in that you don't see two in one market. Classic Rock is doubled up in many markets, but why not classic hits? Or are there some markets with two?

The share level in the sales demos, generally 25-54, that classic hits stations get is generally high enough for a single station to justify being on a large percentage of transactional ad buys.

But fragment that share into two more or less equal amounts, and neither station will make money.

For about a year and a half, Chicago's WLS-FM and WJMK-FM were both "Classic Hits".
That ended this October when WLS took a more Classic Rock direction.

So maybe in support to David's point that two can't really exist successfully. A market I once worked in for nearly a decade currently has two classic hits stations and both seem to be splitting numbers that holds them both down. They are KHLX and KCCL in Sacramento. Although I think I've read on this board that KCCL has a weak signal. I don't live there anymore so I don't get a chance to hear it other than online but both stations seem very similar musically.

We have 2 in the rather small Palm Springs market, KDES and KDGL. KDES with a 3.5 and KDGL at 3.1 as I recall. Both beat by the debut of an R&B oldies station KMRJ with a 6.8, moving up from a 1.2 as classic rock.

Did either of the classic hits stations see a gain with the loss of classic rock in the market? It's possible they didn't since the classic rock only had a 1.2, but someone must have gotten that listening since its doubtful an R&B oldies station would be able to hold onto any classic rock listeners.

Philly has been interesting. WOGL (CBS Classic Hits) and WMGK (Greater Media Classic Rock) have had a good battle going for the baby boomners. WOGL has always been R&B heavy but has added more rock-flavored 70s and 80s tunes and artists -- including a lot of staples of the WMGK playlist. No, you don't hear the Who or Zep on OGL, but Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Skynyrd, Elton, Frampton and many others are getting more play.

No gain for either classic hits stations in Palm Springs. KDES actually lost a lot. From people I have talked to the classic rock fans went on line to the 100.3 out of LA.

Interesting. Your post made me want to go look at Palm Springs ratings. It looks like maybe Arbitron had a sampling issue that favored younger listeners. Classic Hits, AC, Spanish Adult Hits, Smooth Jazz lost a combined 7 shares. Rhythmic, Rhythmic AC, Rock, and Country (younger and younger in recent years) had some nice combined gains. I know Rhythmic AC is usually an older format, but a former colleague of mine tells me that Rhythmic AC in Palm Springs is actually younger than most in the format. Is that the case? They don't stream so I've never been able to listen. Sounded interesting according to her.
