Why is Dance so seemingly accepted on HD-2?

Just a curiosity, as to why it seems many HD-2 stations are putting dance (of all possible other formats they could choose) in their secondary channel?

Is this possibly suggesting that they do consider it a viable format and this is their way of testing the waters or is it just a novelty (albeit an expensive one) until HD-2 really catches on?

Would be interested to hear your perspectives.
Edited by TheFoxx on 02/04/06 08:46 PM.

Good question. The fact that so many are doing this suggests that the Dance Hits format is one just beneath the surface, and one they feel is viable. Those are good things.

Their really arent that many HD-2 Dance stations yet, compared to the many other formats. Their are still many many many places that dont have Dance on HD-2 yet, their is really only a handfull of confirmed HD-2 Dance stations, Power 96 in Miami,,, B-96 in Chicago,,, Wild 94.9 San Francisco, Wired 96.5 in Philly, and thats about it. Wnou was testing HD-2 Dance, but is usually running a Dead Carrier, and No one has yet confirmed the Channel 96.3 in Witchita Runour, and the KQKI Detroit Dance rumour, turned out to be just a mainstream CHR. I dont really consider the Star 93.7 HD-2 channel in Boston, or Hartfords Pride 95.7 to be real Dance stations.

Still alot of NON-Dance tracks in their playlists. Take a look at the last 20 songs played feature on Stars website, lots of R&B and Jammin Oldies tracks in there.

They don't even have a HD2 Dance station in New York or LA!

Yeah, that is what I was getting at - out of all the other formats these stations had to pick from (tried and true)..they chose dance or a derivitave (sp?) of it.

In addition - is the same amount of market analysis done to provide them with the information that dance or dance-leaning stations would be a hit, or is it just a crap shoot and see how it works? You would think that considering the amount of money they sink into providing HD-2 there would be considerable thought put into it - which makes the argument that the dance hits format is indeed, as you say viable - just not as a current big stick type station.

Thanks for your replies.
