Why is Entercom Seattle Doing So Well

1. The Mountain scored its best Dec/Jan ever in terms of billing. It's still the best performing AAA station in the US even with a new PD.

2. Miller/Kaplan rankings for January has a new TOP BILLER in Seattle: 710 KIRO. KIRO is back at the top of the heap in billing after being bumped by an FM music station for several months.

3. Inside research at Infinity is showing big trouble for KMPS. The Wolf is having an immediate impact and KMPS is bleeding cume.

4. Entercom just stole away the crown jewel of KJR, the Sonics, after 21 years.

5. KIRO is likely to have a pretty good couple of trends after their outstanding coverage of the Seahawks, especially during Super Bowl week.

Don't believe everything you read on message boards, especially this one and blatherwatch. For example, this week blatherwatch is reporting that Tony Snow is doing a 14 share on KVI and leads the market. And the writer of the blog says he has seen the ratings and knows it for a fact. Wrong. Tony Snow has never topped a 3 share and has usually been in the 2's in Seattle.

So does that mean we shouldn't believe what you posted either?

Entercom can lick my sweaty left ___ ...

But you are right about one thing, no matter what site, no matter what side...

If you want to call a franchise who takes all the ad revenue and does not increase its flagship stations bottom line or numbers a crown jewel then i got a viaduct in downtown seattle you can buy real cheap.

The Real Story

The new year has started out with a bang on these boards!
The real story on Entercom:

1. KIRO had an outstanding January and ranked #1 in sales in the market, primarily because KMPS lowered its inventory to battle the WOLF. KOMO
ranked third in the market, its best showing in a decade. This is a typical
pattern in January. Agency business is small, so stations that rely on a
lot of direct and NTR tend to top the billing for the month. Both news stations
did well and KMPS slipped to second, but for a good reason. By May you will
see the music stations move up in billing as agency business kicks in. KIRO
and KOMO will move down some.

2. KMTT has been doing well because of a great four-book average. Credit the old PD for that, not the new one. The new PD will have to prove herself over the next four books.

3. KBSG also had a strong month, but KNDD and KTTH were weak.

4. WOLF will definitely hurt KMPS. It was the missing format in Seattle,
a second Country. I would not be surprised to see WOLF beat KMPS, since they
ran commercial free and did a lot of TV. The big question will be: can they
stay on top with a full commercial load and when the TV money runs out? Let's
check back in four books.

On balance a good January for Entercom. KIRO will be a top three biller again
this year, KMTT may break into the top 5 this year and WOLF will certainly do better than the BUZZ did in billing and might be a long-term player, time will tell. For the record the top billing stations in Seattle in January: KIRO, KMPS, KOMO, KMTT, KZOK, KRWM, KBSG, KPLZ, KBKS, KUBE.

yeah, where's the dough with these nba teams anyway??

Where is the benefit of stealing away a team which might not even be in Seattle after this season? The trucks might be packing this team off to a new destination and I doubt it is Bellevue or for that matter within Washington borders at all...
