Why is everyone "NEW"

Here's a question I had... at what point should a station stop calling themselves NEW? It seems that a lot of stations in the region are still referring to themselves as "The New _______" even though they've been the same in well over a year. If you recently changed calls, or more importantly, your format..that's one thing. But nothing has drastically changed in quite some time!

Your thoughts?

Because "NEW" is exciting. "The NEW Yada, Yada, FM"...

"Wow! It's something NEW! I HAVE TO BE INVOLVED!"

Marketing ploy.

OBVIOUSLY a marketing ploy!! But as I've said before, listeners aren't as dumb as the suits think. Eventually they do catch on. Perhaps it's time to invest in some NEW imaging.

I thought people were afraid of new things. I'm intrigued by your response.

Anybody want to suggest a "new" name for "New England"?!

It's been "new" for quite a while now...
______________
"What's That?" "French Horns!"

They're afraid of things that are actually new, not just the same old same old saying that it's new.

I think the word: NEW should be eliminated after 2 weeks! I'm sure one or two of you can think of a 'comparable word or phrase' to take its place?

Most radio stations that choose to use the word: NEW---are basically asking previous listeners to: "Give us another try?" Usually some changes have been already been made in the music, execution of the format or to certain members of the announcing staff? But overall, it's basically a PD's PLEA for former listeners to come back and give the station another try!

"NEW" in Hartford, CT

Example: Hartford, CT. WZMX-FM 93.7 of Hartford switched from (Adult Rhythmic Contemporary) "Dancin' Oldies Z-93.7" to (Urban/Hip Hop) "Hot 93.7" almost five years ago to the day (March 16, 2001). Their liners still say "The All New Hot 93.7-Blazin' 18 Jams in a row." C'mon! Give it up!
______________
The 2006 New York Yankees...on to title #27!

Well, if you already know it's OBVIOUSLY a marketing ploy, why ask why it's done? Why not just bitch about stale imaging instead of asking a question you appearently knew the answer to?

Or was it a retorical question phased in a poor way?

I think that refering to something as "NEW" in this case is used to create a false excitement...

...New as in "NEW AND IMPROVED DORITOS" not new as in something foreign. Something foreign to them, people ARE afraid of.

Re: "NEW" in Hartford, CT

Z-93.7 went by "The New Z-93.7" from the day they signed on in 1999 until the day the flipped to hip-hop in 2001.

IIRC WXCT 990 in Suburban Hartford went by "The All New 990 The X" from the day they changed (I won't say flipped becuase they kept the same news/talk format) from WNTY in April 2003 until they flipped to Spanish SuperMax 990 in May 2004.

Although both stations were short lived, they are two examples of stations that used "The New or The All New" for their entire existence.

Wasn't the NEW reference directed toward "radio stations?" Not for areas of the country?

But if you honestly want a different handle....how about "THE NORTHEAST 6?"

P.S.....and the follow-up lines to "What's that...French Horns?"***

COLUMBUS: "NO...WHAT YOU'RE HOLDING IN YOUR HAND?"

INDIAN CHIEF:...."OH...CORN!"

COLUMBUS: "THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS! WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU GOT TO EAT AROUND HERE?"

INDIAN CHIEF: OH...BERRIES, FRUITS AND ORGANICALLY GROWN VEGETABLES!
